Wed. Pa. girls’ roundup: Episcopal edges Penn Charter

As a defender, Jennie Minnick does not get to score much for Episcopal Academy's soccer team, but she made the most of a rare opportunity to not only score but also win a game Wednesday.

Minnick, a right-footer, hit a left-footed shot 35 yards into the far corner of the net for the winning goal in a 2-1 Inter-Ac League victory over visiting Penn Charter.

Minnick's first goal of the season broke a 1-1 tie 10 minutes into the second half. Taylor Trimble also scored for the Churchwomen (5-3-1 overall, 3-1 league). Kelly Kubach's goal tied it five minutes into the second half for the Quakers.

Catholic. Junior striker Gina Sgrillo had a career-high four goals for host St. Hubert in a 4-0 win over rival Little Flower. Mary-Kate Morris assisted on two of the goals. St. Hubert goalie Krista Patterson had six saves.

Julia Stipa's second-half goal broke a tie and gave host Archbishop Carroll a 2-1 win over Neumann-Goretti. Margaret Filippelli also scored for the Patriots. The Saints' Nicole McAfee briefly tied the game in the second half.

Central. Leah O'Malley scored 20 minutes into the second half off a feed from Jesse Cunilio to give Radnor a 1-0 win at Haverford High. Kyla Crombie had five saves for the Red Raiders (8-2-3, 4-1-2).

Suburban One American. Amanda Cranney scored two second-half goals for host Plymouth Whitemarsh in a 3-0 win over Upper Moreland.

Suburban One National. Freshman forward Megan Schafer scored four goals, including the tying one with six minutes left, to give host Neshaminy a 5-5 deadlock with Pennsbury. Molly Phillips paced the Falcons' attack with a pair of goals.

Ches-Mont. First-half goals from Kendall Frey and Carly Long gave Downingtown East the lead for good in a 2-1 win at West Chester Rustin.

Jessica Ryan's goal with 43 seconds left in the second overtime gave West Chester Henderson a 2-1 win at Kennett.

Maria DeAngelo scored a pair of goals and added an assist for Sun Valley in its 4-2 win over visiting Coatesville.

Taylor Stigale and Gabby Capuano also scored goals in the second half, when the Vanguards scored three of their goals. The Red Raiders got goals from Brittany Allison and Rachel Leaf.

Pioneer Athletic. Amanda Broderick's first-half goal turned out to be the game-winner for host Methacton in its 3-0 win over Spring-Ford. Leanne Heuer and Maddy Parker added insurance goals in the second half for the Warriors.

Catholic Academies. Gwynedd-Mercy scored three first-half goals and goalie Courtney Sullivan took care of the rest, turning back all 10 shots she faced, in a 3-0 win at Nazareth Academy.

Erin Casey, Brianne Lazeznick and Olivia Rosenberger scored.

Tri-County. Tamara Moskowitz scored three goals and Renee Zwillenberg added a pair of assists for Barrack Hebrew in a 5-0 win at Del-Val Friends. Sarah Gordon and Zoe Steier also scored.

Nonleague. Gabby Garza, Robin Harding, Kelly McGlyn and Maria Savarese scored for Abington Friends in its 4-0 win at Perkiomen School.

Christina Furlong had a pair of saves to post the shutout in goal for the Kangaroos (4-3-1).

Princeton Day (N.J.) scored three-first half goals and coasted to a 4-1 win at Friends' Central. Josephine Fisher's second-half goal was the highlight of the day for the Phoenix (2-4-1).


Field hockey

Becky Ely figured into all three goals in a 3-0 win over visiting Abington to keep Council Rock North in the hunt for the Suburban One National Conference title.

Ely scored twice and assisted on Alex Kurzma's goal. The Indians are now 7-2 overall, 7-1 in the conference.

Jackie Pollack's second-half goal gave Pennsbury a 1-1 tie at rival Neshaminy. Emily Hegner scored a first-half goal for the Redskins.

Ali Malatesta's early second-half goal gave William Tennent a 1-1 tie at Council Rock South.

Suburban One Continental. Colleen Kempf scored 10 minutes, 22 seconds into overtime to give Central Bucks South a 1-0 win over visiting Souderton. The Titans (12-0-1) are ranked No. 1 in the Inquirer's Southeastern Pennsylvania Top 10.

North Penn, the No. 3-ranked team, got a pair of assists from Anna MacDonald in a 5-0 win over visiting Pennridge.

Suburban One American. Bryn Frankhouser's three goals powered host Plymouth Whitemarsh to a 10-0 win over Upper Moreland. The Colonials (6-5-1, 4-3-1) also got two goals apiece from Ariana Horn and Galen Newsum.

Goalie Becky Stiteler did not have to make a save for the shutout.

Jackie Hibbs scored twice for Wissahickon in its 4-0 win at Norristown.

Emily Hitchings scored twice and Sarah Carroll added two goals for host Upper Dublin in its 5-0 win over Upper Merion.

Kelly Cross chipped in with a goal and two assists for the Cardinals (8-3, 7-1).

Catholic. Marykate O'Connell had three saves and posted her 10th shutout of the season for unbeaten Cardinal O'Hara in a 5-0 win at St. Hubert. Grace Boston scored three goals for the Lions (12-0-1, 5-0).

Beth Lounsberry's overtime goal gave host Bishop McDevitt a 2-1 win over rival Archbishop Wood.

Inter-Ac. Bree Buysee scored three goals and Katie Gerzabek added a pair of assists for Notre Dame in its 5-0 win at Agnes Irwin.

The Irish (7-4, 5-0) got five saves from goalie Emily Fuss.

Angela Cascio scored on a corner 27:05 into the second half to give host Springside a 1-1 tie with Germantown Academy. Maggie Oberkurcher scored for the Patriots.

Bicentennial. Kelly Duffy's goal seven minutes into the first half stood up for host Lower Moreland in a 1-0 win over Plumstead Christian. Lower Moreland goalie Ali Goldman had five saves.

Pioneer Athletic. Audree Bonavita turned back 22 of the 23 shots she faced to help host Perkiomen Valley preserve a 1-1 with with Boyertown. Andrea Conte scored a first-half goal for the Vikings. Jenna Farkash scored a first-half goal for the Bears.

Emily Kellett's two goals were the difference for Methacton in a 4-2 win at Spring-Ford.

Catholic Academies. Sarah Hospodar scored a goal and assisted on the other as host Merion Mercy earned a 2-1 win over Mount St. Joseph. Hospodar's goal gave the Golden Bears (9-3-1) a 1-0 lead and she assisted on Kate Riga's goal with 12 minutes left in the second half.

Ann Burboyne scored for the Magic.

Merion Mercy goalie Brianna Kelly had five saves.

Emma Keenan scored in overtime to give Gwynedd-Mercy a 2-1 win at St. Basil.

Tri-County. Michelle Cocchimiglio and Kacie Hallman scored second-half goals for West-Mont Christian in its 2-0 win at Kimberton Waldorf.

Goalie Kylee Stimson posted the shutout with five saves.
