Sat. Pa. boys’ and girls’ roundup: Trainer takes Briarwood title

It was a good day for Catholic League teams in the meet at Belmont Plateau as three of the top four teams were from the league. Tatnall (Del.) won the team scoring with 56 points, just four ahead of Cardinal O'Hara, with St. Joseph's Prep (100) third and La Salle (117) fourth.

The championship race was one of three boys' races and three girls' races on the day.

Conestoga won the Division I boys' race by two points over second-place finisher Hatboro-Horsham and Highland Regional (N.J.) took the Division II boys' race.

Tatnall took the team title in the girls' championship race with another Delaware team, St. Mark's, winning girls' Division I and Pearle (N.Y.) taking Division II.

Highland's Megan Venables won the girls' championship race in a record time of 17 minutes, 39 seconds. Pennsbury ace distance runner Sara Sargent was second (18:04).

Katie Skinner of Penn Charter won the Division II race (19:27).

Bulldog Invitational. At Rose Tree Park in Media, Kennett's Glen Williams took the boys' large school individual title in 15:40, six seconds better than Wissahickon's Dillon Farrell. The Trojans, though, took the boys' large school team title.

Strath Haven won the boys' small school team title with 56 points, while Harriton (64) finished second. The Rams had the top individual finisher in that classification, Peter Downs (15:50).

The girls' large school race went to Central Bucks South (62) points, beating Methacton by eight points. The Warriors had the top individual finisher in Kara Steinke (17:40).

Small school honors went to Agnes Irwin's team and Kennett's Emma Starr (19:05).

Boys' Soccer

Ian Apgar scored a pair of first-half goals to help Octorara earn a 3-1 nonleague win at Devon Prep. The Braves also got a goal from Ian Byerly.

Christian Benner scored with 52 seconds left in overtime to give Souderton a 2-1 win at Perkiomen Valley.

Girls' Soccer

Boyertown earned a pair of wins in its own tournament, overwhelming Lakeland, 8-0, and Valley View, 5-0.

Courtney Black had a pair of goals against Lakeland, while Megan Diehl had two assists against Valley View.

In the same tournament, Perkiomen Valley got two goals from Simone Stewart in a 3-0 win over Lakeland. The Vikings had 28 shots on goal, while Perkiomen Valley goalie Emily Armstrong did not have to face a shot.

Perkiomen Valley's other game in the tournanent was a scoreless tie with Valley View.

Catholic. St. Hubert goalie Krista Paterson needed to make only two saves to earn the shutout as the Bambies blanked Hallahan, 4-0, in a game at Neumann University.

Claire Alminde, Emily Klenk, Mary Kate Morris and Sam Stermel scored. St. Hubert is now 5-1 overall, 3-1 league.

Catholic Academies. Host Villa Maria scored two first-half goals and cruised to a 3-1 win over Mount St. Joseph. Kayla Lewis, KathleenMcAffey and Kerry Schubert scored for the Hurricanes (5-3, 3-1). Megan McCabe scored for the Magic.

Field Hockey

Senior defender Rachel Steinman scored three goals, all off corners, to help host Upper Perkiomen past Christopher Dock, 4-1, in a nonleague game.

The Tribe (6-1), who also got a goal from Casey Umstead, scored three second-half goals to break a 1-1 deadlock.

In another nonleague game, District 11 power Lehighton broke open a close game with two goals in the final five minutes to beat visiting Archbishop Carroll, 4-1. Kerry Hunt scored the lone goal for the Patriots.

Girls' Volleyball

Junior Kayla Kleczka had 47 kills for the day as Baldwin went 7-1 in game play to win the Westtown Classic.

The Bears won two games apiece against Westtown, Calvary Baptist and Aquinas.
