Merion Mercy and Bishop Shanahan made it a clean sweep for District 1 teams at the PIAA State girls' volleyball championships Saturday at Central York.

Bishop Shanahan took the Class AAA title with a 25-23, 25-17, 25-13 win over Allentown Central Catholic.

Merion Mercy had all it could handle in repeating its Class AA championship, but in the end the Golden Bears had too much for the rest of the state.

The Golden Bears got their toughest match in the semifinals before cruising to a 25-16, 25-20, 25-16 win over District 3 champion Brandywine Heights for the title.

Holy Redeemer became the first District 2 team ever to reach the semifinals, and it put a scare into the Golden Bears before falling, 22-25, 25-21, 25-14, 18-25, and 15-5.

In that match, the Bears extended their lead from 8-7 to 16-8 behind strong net play by twins Stacey and Shelbey Manthrope.

Shanahan advanced to the Class AAA final with a 19-25, 25-19, 25-21, 25-18 win over Mount Lebanon in the semis.
