Neshaminy upends Abington, 24-17
Early in the season, when Abington rode star quarterback Sam Kind to over 200 yards passing and a shocking upset of perennial conference power Neshaminy, it was a sign the Ghosts would be a contending team.
Friday night, Neshaminy returned the favor.
The eighth-seeded Redskins defeated ninth-seeded Abington, 24-17, in the first round of the District 1 AAAA playoffs at Heartbreak Ridge.
Neshaminy will travel to face top-seeded and undefeated North Penn in next weekend's second round - a rematch of last year's district title game.
This time around against the Ghosts, Neshaminy found a way to limit Kind and their division rivals. With a steady mist and strong winds, the Abington passing game was disrupted. Kind finished 7-of-20 for 69 yards and no completion longer than 18 yards.
"I think we worked together as team," Redskins junior lineman Shane Quinn said. "Our defensive backs had great coverage and gave us a lot of time."
Neshaminy scored on three straight possessions starting with the final one of the first half. Corey Majors scored with 22 seconds left in the second quarter from 10 yards out to tie the game at 10.
It was a demoralizing play for an Abington team that had better field position the entire half.
In the third quarter, the Ghosts barely held the ball, running just six plays on offense. Neshaminy opened the half with a 14-play drive that took nearly eight minutes off the clock. It ended with a 12-yard touchdown pass from Charlie Marterella to Rick Brebner to put the Redskins up for good.
"It feels good," Majors said. "It wasn't a revenge game. They were just the next team."
In the first half, Abington managed three first downs on offense but still came away with 10 points. Alex Eaton blocked a Bryan Reice punt and Kevin Deal grabbed the ball out of a scrum and returned it 6 yards for the game's first score.
The Ghosts' other score came on a 30-yard field goal by Ian MacMillan after a 16-yard punt by Neshaminy gave Abington prime field position. But Abington could not cash it in for more than three points.
And Neshaminy made the Ghosts pay this time.
Kind had a chance to tie the game at the very end. After Abington forced a Neshaminy punt, the Ghosts took over on their own 20 with 2:23 left in the game.
But on a fourth-and-5 with 1:01 left, Kind misfired on a pass to Rich Johnson. Majors also got a hand on it, preventing an Abington comeback.
