Two District 1 hockey championships on Saturday
Villa Maria Academy field hockey coach Maurene Polley says she isn't keen on playing other teams several times in a season, but sometimes you have no choice.
This season, the Hurricanes will play Sacred Heart for the fourth time at 3:30 p.m. Saturday in the PIAA District 1 Class AA championship game at Wissahickon High.
It will be the first of two District 1 title games Saturday, with Central Bucks South taking on Owen J. Roberts in the Class AAA final in the nightcap at 5:30.
The Hurricanes have already beaten Sacred Heart, an Athletic Association of Catholic Academies opponent, in their three previous meetings by scores of 5-0, 3-1 and 3-0. But the Lions managed to earn the fourth meeting by winning three games in the district playoffs as the seventh seed. Villa (19-1 is the top seed.
"I'm never happy about playing the same team over and over," said Polley, whose team is seeking its ninth district championship. "I'm not a big fan of [league] playoffs. But you do what you have to do."
One of her team's wins over Sacred Heart (12-9-1) came in the AACA semifinals. In Tuesday's district semifinals, the Hurricanes came from a 1-0 halftime deficit to rout Springfield (Montco), 6-1, to reach the championship game. Sophomore Caroline Trocellitti scored her second straight hat trick in that game.
Sacred Heart, whose coach Suzanne Finley once played for Polley at Villa, surprised Upper Perkiomen, 2-0, in the other semifinal. Finley said the Lions are anxious to play the Hurricanes.
"We're going to enjoy playing them again," said the Lions' Kerri Crumlish, who scored both goals against Upper Perkiomen.
In the Class AAA championship game, it will be a whole new world for Owen J. Roberts (18-2-1) against South. Until this season, the Wildcats had never gotten past the quarterfinals.
The fourth-seeded Wildcats handed top-seeded Wissahickon its first loss in 20 games in the semifinals Wednesday at Plymouth Whitemarsh. Caitlyn Mitchell, who scored the second goal in the Wildcats' 2-0 win over the Trojans, said she thought her team was well prepared for district and state play.
"We've played some high-caliber teams, and I think that has helped us," Mitchell said.
One of those high-caliber teams is Emmaus, a 6-3 winner over the Wildcats earlier in the season. The Wildcats played the Hornets evenly after falling behind, 2-0, in the first half. The Hornets share top ranking with Penn Manor in the Top of the Circle Web site's weekly state rankings.
South (16-3-1) had to survive a tight race in the Suburban One League Continental Conference to get where is is. The Titans got three goals from Maddie Harding in a lopsided 6-0 win over previously unbeaten Great Valley in the district semifinals.
"They have Maddie and we have our Caitlyn," Wildcats coach Clarence Jennelle said. "It should be interesting. I think the teams match up pretty evenly."
