Conwell-Egan breezes past Lansdale Catholic

AS IT TURNS out, Anthony Singlar might be doubly appealing to football recruiters.

AS IT TURNS out, Anthony Singlar might be doubly appealing to football recruiters.

Singlar, a 5-11, 180-pound senior at Conwell-Egan High, is hearing from the likes of Lafayette, Dayton, Sacred Heart and Monmouth for the skills he shows at strong safety.

But let's listen to coach Kevin Kelly...

"That's only because this is his first year as our starting quarterback," Kelly said. "They don't know what he can do there. I've been telling him to send out some tapes from this year, showing him at QB.

"I'm not sure what'll happen for him in college, but I know he's desperately important to us on both sides of the ball. And that he did a great job on this one."

Kelly spoke last night at Wissahickon High after C-E tamed Lansdale Catholic, 36-14, in a Catholic AAA contest.

Singlar paced the offense by carrying 14 times for 101 yards and one touchdown, and by passing 6-for-15 for 61 yards and another score to Kerry McAnany. His defensive contributions included five tackles and a pair of pass deflections.

"I like both positions," Singlar said. "This is my second year [starting] at safety and only my first at quarterback, but I played that all through pound ball for the Bucks County Bears.

"On defense, I feel my strength is playing the run. On offense, I think I run pretty well and that I need to get better at making my reads on pass plays."

Singlar got his quarterbacking start as a 7-year-old.

"Actually, I was a tight end for maybe the first three games," he said. "My dad was one of the coaches, and he thought QB might be a good fit, because I'm a lefty. I played on a lot of the same pound teams with ['08 C-E QB] Matt Della Croce. Whenever we played together, I was one of his receivers."

C-E rang up 306 yards against the Crusaders. McAnany (9-49) and Vince Benedetti (9-70) ran for the game's first two TDs, while Rich Brown managed one later on a 5-yard thrust.

"Our offensive line did everything right," Singlar said.

He wasn't just blowing smoke?

"Actually, they really did," he added, laughing. "They made things easy."

The grunts in the spread offense were center Dave Maziarz, guards Eric Hrynczyszyn and Joe Robinson, and tackles Steve Humma and Austin Oscovitch.

"I always tell them how well they're playing," promised Singlar, a stellar student (3.5 GPA) who plans to major in kinesiology.

For LC, Andrew Mandato ran for TDs of 6 and 10 yards.

The Crusaders were doomed by turnovers. John Clark and Bobby Simcox made interceptions for C-E, while Clark, Brown and Corey Frey posted fumble recoveries.i
