"It was a lot of fun," said Beaver, a junior third baseman from Owen J. Roberts. "One of the best things was teaming up with girls that I normally compete against during the year. I made some new friends."
Coker, who played third base for Downingtown West, relished the opportunity to display her skills in an atmosphere more relaxed than a traditional showcase. "There were a few college coaches, but not as many as you sometimes see," the junior said. "There was less pressure."
Beaver, Coker and their Chester County teammates bowed to Lehigh Valley, 3-1, yesterday at FDR Park in the final of the fourth annual Carpenter Cup Classic. The Phillies-sponsored tournament is for high school all-stars from the tristate area.
For Lehigh Valley, which won its second title in three years, Whitehall southpaw Caitlin Klobosits and Northampton righthander Alexandra MacLean combined for a two-hitter. Klobosits struck out six in four innings.
"They both threw well," said Beaver, a 16-year-old from Chester Springs. "They really knew where to place the ball."
In a double-elimination tournament, Lehigh Valley, a 4-1 winner over Chester County on Monday, went 5-0 to win the championship. Chester County (5-2) had to play twice yesterday, first earning a 7-2 victory over Tri-Cape.
The 5-foot-6 Beaver played third base, first and catcher in the final. This past season, she helped Owen J. Roberts (17-4) win the PIAA District 1 Class AAAA championship and a trip to the state semifinals. She batted .444 with 11 doubles and four home runs.
"I was just talking to [Wildcats ace pitcher] Kelly Schymanski the other day," Beaver said. "We're already looking toward next season. We have high hopes."
In yesterday's title game, Coker, playing center field, singled up the middle in the first inning. She flied out to right in the third and grounded out to second in the sixth.
"We played a lot of games over the last couple of days," Coker said. "We were tired. It was an accomplishment to make it here."
Batting third or fourth for Downingtown West, Coker hit about .480 this year and spurred the Whippets to the Ches-Mont National Division crown. The 16-year-old, also a quality basketball player, was a second-team all-Southeastern Pennsylvania selection by The Inquirer.
Against Lehigh Valley yesterday, Chester County got both of its hits and its only run in the first. West Chester Henderson's Casie Riegel drew a leadoff walk and scored on a bases-loaded walk to West Chester East's Kerrianne Jones.
