Carpenter Cup

Seiz's homer in the ninth seals the championship

A sophomore on the upperclassmen-laden Suburban One League National/Bicentennial roster, Ryan Seiz expected to play a secondary role in the 23d annual Carpenter Cup Classic. As it turned out, the switch-hitting catcher from Christopher Dock was the star of the baseball tournament.

After clubbing a home run in the semifinals, Seiz yesterday slammed a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the SOL National/Bicentennial an improbable 7-6 come-from-behind championship win over the Lehigh Valley all-stars at Citizens Bank Park.

With no outs and Neshaminy's Brian Fiocco at first base, Seiz, batting from the right side of the plate against Parkland southpaw Joe Candelmo, ended the game with a blast into the left-field seats.

"It was a first-pitch fastball, right at my eyes," Seiz said. "It's exactly where I like the ball. I just turned on it. A second after I hit it, it was like, 'We just won the championship at Citizens Bank Park.' "

Fiocco watched the ball quickly leave the park. "When he hit it, right away I knew it was out," the junior outfielder said. "It looked like it was going to hit the scoreboard out there."

It was the first Carpenter Cup crown for SOL National/Bicentennial. Before the leagues merged for the tournament in 2005, SOL National won championships in 1988, '93 and '99.

In Monday's 6-0 semifinal shutout of Chester County, the 6-foot-2, 185-pound Seiz homered to right-center in the fourth inning.

Trailing Lehigh Valley, 5-0, entering the bottom of the seventh, the SOL National/Bicentennial tied the game with the help of two Lehigh Valley errors. Bob Reece, a shortstop from Neshaminy, drove home Seiz, who reached base on an error, with an RBI single up the middle to make it 5-5.

"It was a fastball on the outside corner," Reece said. "I kind of just stuck my bat out there and made contact."

Parkland pitchers Cody Weiss, a La Salle recruit selected in the 26th round of the amateur draft by the Los Angeles Dodgers, and Don Moller tossed one-hit ball through six innings.

"They were both strong," Fiocco said. "After those two, there was a little bit of a drop-off. We were able to take advantage of it."

Lehigh Valley, which totaled 13 hits off four pitchers, went back in front in the ninth on a RBI single by M.J. Miorelli.

Fiocco set the stage for Seiz's heroics with a leadoff single to second base. In three tournament appearances, Seiz went 3 for 7 with three runs and three RBIs.

Harry S Truman lefty Josh Patman, who relieved Pennsbury's Joe Crossin in the ninth and faced two batters, picked up the victory.
