Central needed a sweep of the doubles matches to beat
Masterman, 3-2, in the Public League team tennis championship match yesterday at the Arthur Ashe Tennis Center.
The Lancers (18-5) have a short turnaround, as they are set to play a PIAA state first-round match today against Great Valley, also at Arthur Ashe.
Mike Horwits has been coach at Central the last two seasons, winning both titles, after taking over for Steve Kolman, who is now the chairman of District 12 tennis.
The Lancers won all 12 of their league matches.
"We played a difficult nonleague schedule," Horwits said. "The kids have been great about it. There are a lot of good teams out there and we've been fortunate enough to go against some good ones.
"It's like I told the kids, quoting Jon Gruden, "We'll play anyone anywhere, even on the Walt Whitman Bridge.'
"The kids didn't know what I was talking about. I don't think they knew Gruden was even a coach for the Eagles once."
Central got a win at first doubles from James Ayer and Brendan Curry and at second doubles from Sam Weinstock and Lucas Isakowitz.
The Lancers had a 3-1 lead going into the last match off the court, first singles. Masterman's Kenny Greene pulled that out in three sets, beating Robert Troyer, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 but, by then, the outcome had been determined.
Gabe Steerman won at second singles for Central.
Reuben Hampton took third singles for Masterman.
Girls' Soccer
Despite yesterday's downpour, all four Public League quarterfinals were completed thanks, in part to two turf sites.
At Simon Gratz,
Philadelphia Academy Charter got two goals from Bonnie McQuillan in a 3-2 win over
Girls High. Teammate Jessica Jastrzebski also scored for the Chargers (4-5-1).
Also at Gratz,

Washington.
At
Northeast, the host Vikings needed a goal from Claudia Moreira to beat
Masterman, 1-0, and defending champion
Central coasted to a 5-1 win over
Bodine.
The Lancers got two goals from Ellen Kaufmann and two from Casey Barrett. The Lancers are now 11-0 and will face Philadelphia Academy Charter tomorrow in a 2 p.m. semifinal game at Gratz. Barrett's sister, Jillian, also scored.
In the 4 p.m. semifinal, also at Gratz, Northeast will face Franklin Towne Charter.
