Lower Moreland turned in a unique tennis performance yesterday.
Drew Hoffman and Samuel Harmatz won the District 1 Class AA doubles title yesterday at HealthPlex, giving the Lions performers in the PIAA Class AA singles, doubles and team tournaments.
Harmatz won the doubles title two years ago while Tyler Cohen is the defending state singles champion and Lower Moreland is the defending state team titlist.
Hoffman and Harmatz earned a trip to states with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Gary Earland and Andrew Pearson of
Springfield (Montgomery County).
In Class AAA, Forrest Grinstead and Adam Salam of
Strath Haven beat Fernando Tovia and Jake VanderPloeg of
Central Bucks South, 7-5, 7-6 (7-4), to earn the District 1 top seed at states.
Class AA semifinals: Drew Hoffman and Samuel Harmatz, Lower Moreland, def. Steve Tassone and John Reading, Phoenixville, 6-1, 6-1; Gary Earland and Andrew Pearson, Springfield (M), def. Torey Broderson and Andrew Wulc, Harriton, 7-5, 2-6, 7-6 (7-4).
Final: Hoffman and Harmatz def. Earland and Pearson, 6-2, 6-1.

Final: Grinstead and Salam def. Tovia and VanderPloeg, 7-5, 7-6 (7-4).
Third place: Baver and Grimaldi def. Johnson and Haskell, default.
Track and Field
Carlton Lavong of
Methacton had a roller-coaster kind of day at the Suburban One American Conference championship meet at Plymouth Whitemarsh.
Lavong watched his year-old meet record fall in the triple jump, but he won the long jump and helped Methacton take the team title with 1961/2 points.
Lavong won the long jump with a leap of 22-21/2, but Folarin Ijelu of
Wissahickon broke his meet record in the triple jump of 45-8 with a distance of 46-51/2.
The Warriors also got a meet-record performance from Shane Ordway, who won the pole vault after clearing the bar at 14-7. He broke the record of 14-5 set in 1988 by
Upper Dublin's Dave Wilmore.
Bicentennial. Matthew Chylak won the 800- and 1,600-meter runs and led host
Holy Ghost Prep to the league title with 162 points.
Chylak won the 800 with a time of 1:57.84 and the 1,600 in 4:26.10.
Baseball
Adam Settle raced home on a single by Brett Brenner and
Harriton slipped past host
Devon Prep, 1-0, in a nonleague game.
Settle was hit by a pitch and advanced on a single by Dan Cooper. Tad Komacek pitched perfect fourth, fifth and sixth innings to earn the win on the mound.
La Salle jumped out to a 9-1 lead and held on to beat host
Haverford School, 10-9.
The Explorers scored the deciding run in the sixth inning, taking a 10-6 lead. Dan Wood went 3 for 3 with two runs scored and three RBIs, and teammate Tyler Freeman was 2 for 4 with a run scored and three RBIs.
