North Penn's Melanie Ruff and Zack Montijo could have been excused if they had underperformed yesterday in the Suburban One League National Conference track and field championships at Central Bucks South.
However, with the winning tradition of their school in mind, Ruff, who was ill, and Montijo, who wasn't fully rested, helped lead their school's girls' and boys' teams to victory.
The North Penn girls won the championship with 312 points, including 70 points from an undefeated dual-meet season. The North Penn boys won with 288 points, including 70 points from an undefeated season.
"This is a tradition that we win this meet," said Ruff, who won the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes in 12.73 and 26.04 seconds, respectively. And that was after being sidelined all week by the flu.
"We won the last three [championships]."
Montijo, one of the top half-milers in the country, had slept little after attending the senior prom the night before, and won the 800 in 1 minute, 56.52 seconds.
"There's no way I wanted my team or myself to end the streak," said Montijo, referring to the fact that North Penn hasn't lost a conference title since 1994.
"It's all due to good coaching. They take mediocre guys and turn them into something special.
"My first meet ever in the ninth grade I ran a 27-second 200. Now I'm going to a Division 1 school."
The 5-foot-7, 135-pound East Carolina-bound athlete also ran the third leg of the winning 4x400 relay and placed second in the 1,600.
In all, the girls broke three meet records, the boys, four.
Neshaminy's Kevin Steinberg won the 200 in 21.69 seconds, shattering the 2006 record of 21.79 set by Bensalem's Reggie Carter.
Steinberg, a 6-foot, 170-pounder, who signed with the University of Connecticut, also won the 100 in 10.87.
"My personal best is a 10.73 [fastest in the state], which I got in the first meet of the year," Steinberg said. "My start was average. I felt I could have done better."
Abington's Leah Nugent broke meet records in the 100 and 300 hurdles in 15.04 and 45.44, respectively.
