The top-seeded team in the District 1 Class AAA doubles tournament won as expected, but the No. 2 seed ran into all kinds of trouble in a second-round match at HealthPlex yesterday.
Unseeded Bill Fine and Matt Siggs of
West Chester East stunned second-seeded Luv Sodha and Joe Peters of
Council Rock North, 6-7 (3-7), 6-4, 6-4, to advance to the quarterfinals tomorrow.
Also advancing was top-seeded Forrest Grinstead and Adam Salam of
Strath Haven. They downed Omar and Mohammed Ammovnis of
Bensalem, 6-4, 6-3, to move to the quarterfinals.
Class AA. Unseeded Gary Earland and Andrew Pearson of
Pottsgrove advanced to the semifinals after winning their quarterfinal match at HealthPlex.
Earland and Pearson dropped No. 3 seeds Matt Rounick and Anthony Makarov of
Phoenixville, 6-3, 6-2, to advance to a semifinal match against No. 2 seeds Corey Broderson and Andrew Wilc of
Harriton.
Track and Field
Western Albemarle of Virginia and
Archbishop Ryan won national indoor titles last winter in the distance medley relay, and both schools put on quite a show when they faced off at the Louck Games in White Plains, N.Y.
Western Albemarle won the race with a meet-record time of 10 minutes, 11.32 seconds, the second-fastest time in the country this season.
The Raiders were third in 10:14.91 with a team of Phil Celona, Kevin Myslinski, Kieran Hennessy and Sean Mallon.
Baseball
Frankford may have clinched the Division A title in the Public League, but
GAMP showed the Pioneers that it will have to be reckoned with in the playoffs.
Eugene Aversa blasted a two-out, walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh inning and gave GAMP an 8-7 win over visiting Frankford.
District 12 Class AAA. In a second-round playoff game, Justin Holzshu tripled and Dom Simone knocked him in with a double as
Swenson got past visiting
Ben Franklin, 9-4.
District 12 Class A. Billy Powers hit a grand slam in the second inning and propelled
Masterman to a 13-4 semifinal win over
Philadelphia Academy Charter.
Powers finished the game with five runs batted in and Adam Chandler added three doubles for the Blue Dragons.
Masterman will play GAMP in the District 12 Class A title game on Monday.
Catholic Blue. Rick Horn hit a two-run triple in the third inning and led division-leading
Conwell-Egan past second-place
Archbishop Wood, 6-1.
Joe Tretter went 3 for 3 with an RBI and three runs scored for the Eagles, who got a complete-game effort and four strikeouts from Andrew Sinon.
Neumann-Goretti stayed on Conwell-Egan's tail with a 4-3 win over visiting
Bishop McDevitt.
Mark Donato hit a single, a double, a triple and knocked in three runs for the Saints.
Bicentennial. Greg Olenski hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning and boosted
Holy Ghost Prep past visiting
Christopher Dock. The Firebirds and Pioneers are now tied for first place.
In another league encounter, Matt Maiorelli belted a bases-empty home run in the top of the seventh inning to give New Hope-Solebury the lead, and the Lions held on to beat host Bristol, 17-15.
Maiorelli also hit a three-run homer in the sixth inning.
Penn-Jersey. For the first time ever,
Barrack Hebrew clinched first place and earned the top seed in the league tournament after beating host
St. Mary's (N.J.), 18-1.
Joel Fishbein hit his first career homer, a three-run shot in the second inning, to set the pace for the Cougars.
In another league game, Frank Kobryn drove in a run with a double in the bottom of the seventh inning and led
Mercy Vocational past visiting
International Christian, 11-10.
Kobryn was 4 for 5 with three runs scored.
Lacrosse
Ben Tuscai scored the last of his two goals with 1:05 left in the game and gave
West Chester East a 7-6 Ches-Mont League win over host
Downingtown West.
