Coach Nancy Juka was as surprised as anyone that her Engineering and Science boys' and girls' teams swept the Public League track and field championships yesterday at Northeast's Charlie Martin Memorial Stadium.
"It's unbelievable, truly unbelievable," Juka said. "I'm shocked."
The E&S boys defended their title despite missing two injured runners, Austin Perron (hamstring) and Elliot Rhodes (knee), and not fielding squads in the 4x800- and 4x400-meter relays.
Terence Lee was a triple winner for the shorthanded Engineers. The 5-foot-9, 130-pound senior won the 1,600 in 4 minutes. 40.91 seconds, the 3,200 in 10:24.42, and the 800 in 1:57.73.
"My goal was to go out there and win all three events," said Lee, an 18-year-old who lives near Broad and Ogontz in West Oak Lane.
Said Juka: "He put in an amazing, amazing performance. We really needed it, too."
Ramaan Ansley chipped in with a third-place finish in the 100 with a time of 11.06. In the 4x100 relay, the Engineers (43.58) were runners-up to Central (43.31).
E&S held off Simon Gratz, which had 66 points, and Imhotep Charter (51). For the second-place Bulldogs, Frank Wainwright won the 300 hurdles (38.53) and 110 hurdles (14.99) and ran the third leg of a victorious 4x400 relay (3:30.69).
Winning six events, the E&S girls netted 106 points and turned back Girls' High (101) and Swenson (91.5).
For the Engineers, senior Jenna Arnold took first in the 1,600 (5:21.84) and 3,200 (12:13.71). "I'm excited, very happy," she said. "I'm surprised our team won."
E&S freshman Cierra White won the 200 (25.42) and anchored the winning 4x100 and 4x400 relays. Senior Benita Taylor took first in the 800 (2:22.86) and led off the 4x400.
Swenson's Anthonia Ballard won the 100 (14.87) and 300 hurdles (44.16). Teammate Shanae Bailey, bothered by a groin injury, concentrated on the 100 and won that event in 11.81 seconds.
