Paulsboro wins 31st state title in wrestling

Paulsboro High School wrestling coach Paul Morina (left) led the Red Raiders to their 31st state title on Sunday.

Brandon Green, George Worthy, and Jacob Perez each won by technical fall as Paulsboro beat Emerson-Park Ridge, 32-22, to capture the Group 1 state wrestling title Sunday at Toms River North.

Georgio Mazzeo won a 5-3 decision at 113 pounds in the penultimate bout to clinch the victory for the Red Raiders, who took home their 31st state title and third in a row.

Geno Duca finished the match with a decision for Paulsboro (20-0).

Other key contributors for the Red Raiders in the state finals were Rick Eli, who won a major decision at 132 pounds, and Santino Morina, who won a major decision at 182.

Paulsboro had beaten Roselle Park, 49-17, in the state semifinals on Sunday morning.

Mazzeo (113), Green (170), and Anthony Morina (195) registered pins in that match for the Red Raiders, and Santino Morina (182) notched a technical fall.

Delsea beat Pascack Valley, 48-25, in the Group 3 state semifinals as Asa Walton (106), Chris Recinto (113), Travis Griffith (120), John Patterson (132), Tim Spatola (145), and Tommy Maxwell (220) registered pins, Bill Janzer (195) earned a technical fall, and Nick Bennett (152) won a major decision, and Mason Maxwell (170) won by decision.

In the state final, Delsea was beaten by South Plainfield, 48-23. Spatola, Mason Maxwell and Janzer won decisions for Delsea, and Bennett won by technical fall.

Highland fell to Long Branch, 49-21, in the Group 4 state semifinals.

Matt Hoelke (106) won by pins for the Tartans, and Justin Cariss (138), Jared Colbert (182), and Devon Starks (220) won major decisions.
