Friday's Pa. roundup: Notre Dame girls' basketball advances to PAISAA title game thanks to late free throw in double overtime

Allie Lynch made a free throw with 4.3 seconds left in the second overtime Friday to send the Notre Dame girls’ basketball team to the PAISAA title game with a 51-50 triumph over Abington Friends. Lynch included an all-around performance with 10 points, seven rebounds, and six assists. Mandy McGurk led the Irish with a game-high 19 points, while Maggie Pina added 11 points.

In other semifinal, Lauren Ross’ basket with 10 seconds left lifted Shipley over Germantown Academy, 55-52. Ross finished with 20 points, while teammate Anna Camden posted a double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds.

Notre Dame and Shipley will play in Saturday’s championship game at Westtown.


Shirley Piotrowski led all scorers with 15 points to lift Delco Christian over Bristol, 29-24, in the District 1 Class 2A semifinals. The Knights will play the winner of Sacred Heart and Calvary Christian on March 3.


Maggie O’Hare recorded 17 points as West Chester Rustin defeated Upper Meion, 52-35, in the District 1 Class 5A quarterfinals. Grace Polona and Erin Gallagher chipped in with 14 and 12 points, respectively, for the Golden Knights. West Chester Rustin will play Villa Maria in the semifinals on Tuesday.

In other quarterfinal action, Erin Thompson netted a game-high 23 points to lift No. 1 seed West Chester Henderson over No. 8 seed Radnor, 56-46. Grace Ferguson pitched in with 16 points for the Warriors. Henderson will play the winner of Mount St. Joseph and Springfield (D) on Tuesday.


Emily McAteer stuffed the stat sheet with 27 points, 12 rebounds, four assists, and five steals as Garnet Valley took down Abington, 56-48, in the District 1 Class 6A quarterfinals. Brianne Borcky added 13 points and eight rebounds for the Jaguars. Garnet Valley will play the winner of Souderton and Council Rock North on Wednesday.


Casey Remolde scored 18 points as St. Basil handled Palmerton, 63-29, in the District 1-11 Class 3A first round. Denae Carter had 13 points for the Panthers. St. Basil will play the winner of Palisades and Notre Dame (Green Pond) on Tuesday.


Jamia Davis scored 10 of her 18 points in the third quarter in Lower Moreland’s 52-31 victory over Springfield (M) in the District 1 Class 4A semifinals. Phoebe Lynch added 11 points for the Lions. Lower Moreland will play the winner of Gwynedd Mercy and Nazareth Academy March 3.

Boys’ Basketball

Steve Payne scored a game-high 21 points and grabbed five rebounds as Lower Merion rolled to a 63-39 victory over Pennridge in the District 1 Class 6A quarterfinals. Jack Forrest contributed with 19 points, five rebounds, and five assists for the Aces. Lower Merion will take on Abington in the semifinals on Tuesday at the Liacouras Center.

In other quarterfinal action, Eric Dixon finished with 23 points as Abington topped Norristown, 57-43. Lucas Monroe added 12 points for the Ghosts. Abington will play Lower Merion on Tuesday.

Top-seeded Plymouth Whitemarsh used an 11-point fourth quarter advantage to pull away from No. 8 seed Upper Darby, 70-58. Ish Horn poured in 27 points for the Colonials while Naheem McLeod had 16 points. Plymouth Whitemarsh will square off against Central Bucks West on Tuesday.


Milton Robinson ended with 17 points as Conestoga outlasted North Penn in overtime, 62-54, in the District 1 Class 6A playbacks. Zach Lezanic and Shane Scott each added 15 points for the Pioneers. Conestoga moves on to play Neshaminy on Tuesday.

In other 6A playback action, Ward Roberts scored 16 points in Bensalem’s 48-40 win over Downington West. Kris Shields and James Lieble contributed with 14 and 10 points, respectively, for the Owls. Bensalem will play the winner of Downington East and Central Bucks East on Tuesday.


Drew Grow finished with 22 points as Plumstead Christian knocked off Jenkintown, 48-45, in the District 1 Class 1A first round. Carson Curry added 15 points for the  Panthers. Plumstead Christian will travel to Girard College on Tuesday.

In other first round action, after holding a 17-point halftime lead, Phil-Mont Christian fended off Christian Academy, 51-48. Lyle Tipton delivered with 22 points for the Falcons, followed by Daniel Olinger’s 15. Phil-Mont Christian will play top-seeded Faith Christian on Tuesday.


Misrahim Nyagwegwe had a game-high 23 points, eight rebounds, and four assists as Dock Mennonite cruised to a 62-43 victory over Collegium Charter in the District 1 Class 2A semifinals. Nolan Bolton and Jackson Scialanca added 12 and 11 points, respectively, for the Pioneers. Dock Mennonite will play Delco Christian on March 3.


Christian Ray recorded a double-double with 19 points and 12 rebounds to lead Haverford School past Perkiomen School, 62-42, in the PAISAA semifinals. Kharon Randolph paced the Fords with 23 points, while Christian Clover added 12 points and four assists. Haverford School will play Hill School for the title on Saturday.
