Moorestown boys trip Burlington Twp. on penalty kicks

His job usually is to keep the soccer ball out of the net, not to deposit it.

Tom Hand did both in a dramatic shootout Friday as Moorestown captured the South Jersey Group 3 championship in boys' soccer with a 4-3, penalty-kick victory over Burlington Township.

Hand, a junior goaltender, made one save and scored one goal in the shootout as 11th-seeded Moorestown (13-8) won its second consecutive sectional title.

The teams played to a 0-0 tie after 100 minutes of soccer.

The Quakers advance to face Princeton, a 2-0 winner over Freehold Boro, in Tuesday's state semifinals at 7 p.m. at Toms River South.

Princeton's coach is Wayne Sutcliffe, the brother of Moorestown coach Mike Sutcliffe.

Burlington Township, the No. 13 seed, finished with an 8-9-3 record.

"We came together as a team in the playoffs," Burlington Township coach Jon Marks said. "We had some guys really step up."

This was a clash between Burlco Liberty rivals who would not have qualified for the tournament before this season, when the NJSIAA opened brackets to include as many as 16 teams, including some that were below .500 at the cutoff date.

Both the Quakers and the Falcons were below .500 at midseason. But they both showed the strength of the Burlco Liberty - which also includes Rancocas Valley and Delran - by beating higher-seeded teams in advancing to Friday's final on the artifical turf at Moorestown's Wesley Bishop Park.

"I kept saying we have a losing record but we're a pretty good team," Moorestown's Sutcliffe said. "Group 3 was wide open this year. I thought if we could get our defense settled and start playing a little better, we'd have as good a chance as anybody."

Neither team could score in regulation or during the two, 10-minute overtime periods, although Moorestown had some good chances in the second half. The Quakers also just missed a golden opportunity early in the second overtime when Chad Gamble blasted a shot off the right post.

That was an omen for Burlington Township.

The Falcons' best chance came in the second overtime when Matthew Lynch's header off a corner kick from Christian Montemore appeared destined for the net. But Hand leaped and punched the ball over the crossbar.

Hand made a save early in the shootout to give Moorestown the edge. But Burlington Township goalie Mike DiPaola came right back with a save to even things.

It was 3-3 after four shooters and both teams elected to have their goalies serve as the fifth shooter.

"It's kind of fitting," Marks said. "They shoot on each other all the time when they are warming up. Goalies have good legs."

Hand went first and deposited the ball in the upper right corner of the net to give Moorestown a 4-3 edge.

"I was waiting for him to make a move," Hand said. "I saw him turn his hips and went the other way."

DiPaola was next. He fired a low hard shot that eluded Hand's diving attempt but bounced off the left post.

Moorestown's players flooded the field in celebration.

Asked what he thought when he heard the sound of DiPaola's shot hitting metal, Hand said, "Thank you, post."
