S. Jersey Girls: S.J. girls: Wildwood's Reyes hits 1,000 points in style

Wildwood girls' basketball coach Dave Troiano was not surprised to see Leishly Reyes put her name into the Warriors' record books.

Wildwood girls' basketball coach Dave Troiano was not surprised to see Leishly Reyes put her name into the Warriors' record books.

He knew exactly how hard the senior guard had been working, ever since he received a tip from a Domino's delivery guy that she'd been practicing her shot at 1 a.m. on the outdoor courts of the J. Byrne Community Center.

All that work paid off Thursday night. Reyes scored a career-high 38 points, including the 1,000th of her career, to lead host Wildwood to a 76-40 Tri-County League basketball victory over Schalick.

Reyes became the eighth girls' player in school history to reach the milestone when she connected on a layup with four minutes remaining.

Achieving the milestone looked unlikely to Reyes entering the season.

"I didn't think I'd get the opportunity," Reyes said. "During my freshman and sophomore years, I slacked off. But then I realized that basketball would be what got me out of Wildwood."

The total shattered her previous high of 28 points.

"She wanted to be the best player coming into the season," said Troiano, who has coached Wildwood for 37 years. "She took advantage of every opportunity she was given and has become a great all-around player."

In other Tri-County games:
