S. Jersey Boys: Mandescu scores twice to set Haddon Township record

Mario Mandescu has scored more goals than any boys' soccer player in Haddon Township history, but scoring isn't even what the senior does best.

Mario Mandescu has scored more goals than any boys' soccer player in Haddon Township history, but scoring isn't even what the senior does best.

Mandescu knocked in two goals to break the career scoring record, and Haddon Township rolled at Overbrook, 8-1, in a Colonial Conference interdivision game Monday.

Mandescu plays center midfielder, so he's more likely to dish out assists than deposit goals.

"He's an unbelievable player," said Hawks coach Jim Bonder. "He consistently has more assists than goals, but he's still able to find the net."

Mandescu has 12 goals and 16 assists this season for Haddon Township, ranked No. 10 in South Jersey by The Inquirer.

He broke the record midway through the second-half on his second goal of the game and the 35th of his career. He received the ball 18 yard out and beat three defenders before putting the ball in the right side.

The previous record of 34 goals was set by Jay Casey in 2010.

Staying true to his reputation as a passer, Mandescu added two assists.

Tri-County Royal. Matt Hendrickson scored the winner in the 89th minute from eight yards as No. 5 Clearview won, 2-1, at Kingsway. Hendrickson tied the game with 10 minutes left in regulation.

Cape-Atlantic American. Christian Bik and Sam Mitcho scored as No. 6 St. Augustine blanked Absegami on the road, 2-0.
