The Vikings, who entered the season ranked No. 1 in South Jersey by The Inquirer, opened with a hard-fought loss against No. 2 Lenape on Thursday. The Vikings had to come right back Saturday and play at No. 4 Shawnee.

Jaelyn Thompson made sure the weekend wasn't a loss for Eastern. Thompson's header off a corner late in the first half leveled the score, 1-1, and that's how it ended in a driving rainstorm.

Taylor Ryan scored for Shawnee, and Renegades keeper Caroline Farley made seven saves. Eastern's Imani Taylor had eight stops.

Williamstown Tournament. Madison Batra's second-half goal gave Kingsway a 2-1 win over Timber Creek in the championship game. Kristen O'Donnell also scored.

Lauren Wood scored two goals, and MaryKate Ulmer added another to pace No. 4 Williamstown to a 3-1 defeat of Egg Harbor Township.

Nonleague. Juliann Gee completed a hat trick with 12 minutes left in fifth-ranked Holy Cross' 7-0 win over visiting Pemberton. Morgan Moroco scored twice.

Alex Kane and Alex Keck scored to send Cinnaminson past Gloucester Catholic, 2-0, at Rowan University.

Olympic American. Leah Reistle's first-half goal stood up for Cherokee in a 1-0 win at Cherry Hill East.

Girls' Cross-Country

Haddonfield sophomore Briana Gess opened her season by placing first in the championship division of the Briarwood Invitational at Belmont Plateau.

Gess, who won the 1,600 meters at the Meet of Champions last spring, finished in 18 minutes, 40 seconds.

Boys' Soccer

Danny Hampton's second goal, in the 80th minute, lifted host Cherokee to a 2-1 victory at Cherry Hill East in Olympic American play. Robert Gillin assisted on both.

In another Olympic American game, Shawnee's Dom Silvestro scored twice in a 2-2 tie at Eastern.
