Thurs. S.J. boys' roundup: St. Augustine overwhelms Bergen Catholic

Mike Sutton and Steve Pontrello scored four goals apiece and Pat McMenamin recorded a hat trick, powering third-seeded St. Augustine past No. 6 seed Bergen Catholic, 14-4, Thursday in an NJSIAA State Non-Public A boys' lacrosse quarterfinal.

The Hermits move on to a Saturday semifinal at No. 2 seed Delbarton.

State Group 2. Dylan Shulte (3 goals, 7 assists) sparked a second-half surge that carried fourth-seeded Seneca over No. 5 seed Sparta, 12-8.

The Golden Eagles' next test comes in Saturday's semifinal at top-seeded Somerville.

State Non-Public B. Tyler Graham had two goals, Jake Turner chipped in a pair of assists, and goalie Kyle Nunan stopped a dozen shots, but fifth-seeded Gloucester Catholic fell, 10-6, in a quarterfinal at No. 4 Oratory Prep.

Baseball

Adam Quaranta singled, doubled, stole a base, drove in two runs, and scored three times to lead sixth-seeded Moorestown Friends over No. 11 seed Doane Academy, 9-2, in a South Jersey Non-Public B opener.

Ethan Magaziner went the distance for the win, striking out nine and scattering two hits and four walks. Doane's runs came on a Brett Keays homer in the third.

The Foxes move on to Tuesday's quarterfinal at No. 3 seed Timothy Christian.

Volleyball

Nick DiVito delivered 25 kills, served three aces and scrambled for three digs and Liam McIntyre dealt 37 assists and made four blocks, as fourth-seeded Cherry Hill East rallied to defeat No. 5 seed Sterling, 2-1, in a South Jersey quarterfinal.

Evan Smith added seven kills and six digs for the Cougars, who rebounded from a 22-25, opening-game loss with 25-15 and 25-16 wins. Next up for East is a semifinal trip to top-seeded Southern Regional on Wednesday.

In another South Jersey quarterfinal, third-seeded Williamstown eliminated No. 6 seed Clearview, 2-0, behind the solid play of Dan Collins (6 kills, 9 digs) and Allan Haynes (5 kills, 2 blocks, 10 digs).

The Braves advance to a Wednesday semifinal at second-seeded Eastern, which took out No. 10 seed Central Regional, 2-0.

Central Jersey. Luke Garvey dished out 29 assists to go with 11 digs, Zack Palin controlled the net with 11 kills, and Colin Lynch produced 11 digs and an ace in fourth-seeded Cinnaminson's 2-1, come-from-behind win over No. 5 seed Hillsborough.

The Pirates will face top-seeded St. Joseph-Metuchen in a semifinal on Wednesday.
