Tues. S.J. boys' roundup: Turner, Jackson propel Gloucester Catholic

Jake Turner scored four times to reach 100 career goals, and Steven Jackson picked apart the Moorestown Friends defense for four goals and four assists, sending No. 5 seed Gloucester Catholic to a 15-7 rout of the 12th-seeded Foxes on Tuesday in the opening round of the NJSIAA State Non-Public B boys' lacrosse tournament.

State Non-Public A. Pat McMenamin netted four goals, Mike Sutton contributed two goals and three assists, and Will Fox won 10 of 12 faceoffs as third-seeded St. Augustine outshot No. 14 seed Paul VI, 59-10, en route to an opening-round 17-1 romp.

Baseball

Justin Healey and Christian Candeloro teamed up to bat 4 for 7 with two RBIs, and Beau Hall held No. 11 seed Woodrow Wilson to one hit, sending sixth-seeded Ocean City to a 10-1 win in a South Jersey Group 3 opener.

Central Jersey Group 4. Ninth-seeded Rancocas Valley used a three-run third-inning rally and shutout pitching by Nick Chieco to upend No. 8 seed Montgomery, 3-0.

Central Jersey Group 1. Lou Potts tripled twice and scored a pair of runs, and sophomnore Austin Minton tossed a two-hit shutout, as sixth-seeded Florence bounced No. 11 seed East Brunswick Tech, 10-0.

Starter Anthony Coniglio (nine strikeouts) and Pete Perez combined to stop No. 13 seed Henry Hudson on three hits and no earned runs, helping fourth-seeded Burlington City claim a 5-2 home win.

N.J. Vocational Tournament. Mike Reed's sacrifice fly tied it in the bottom of the seventh inning, and Chris Gilcrest raced home on Zach Funk's one-out single in the eighth, completing host GCIT's 3-2 come-from-behind semifinal victory over Bergen County Tech.

Chris Giunta won in relief for the Cheetahs, who will face Passaic County Tech in the championship on May 30.

Volleyball

Senior setter Zack Hickman returned from a college visit in time to contribute 21 assists, four digs and two blocks as sixth-seeded Clearview battled past No. 11 seed Monsignor Donovan, 2-1, in the opening round of the NJSIAA South Jersey Tournament.

The tandem of Adam Coughlan and Sam Pisker dominated at the net, combining for 16 kills, 12 digs, three assists and two blocks, while fellow senior John Schnatz burned the floor for five digs for the Pioneers (12-6).

In other South Jersey opening-round action:

Dan Collins (11 digs, 9 kills, 6 assists), Allan Haynes (8 kills, 7 digs, 2 blocks) and Zach Bernardino (9 assists, 5 digs) turned in strong performances for third-seeded Williamstown in a 2-0 sweep of No. 14 Pennsauken Tech.

Fourth-seeded Cherry Hill East dismissed No. 13 seed Collingswood, 2-0. Nick DiVito led the host Cougars with 13 kills, three digs and two aces, and Liam McIntyre dished out 20 assists.
