Gloucester Catholic headed to Las Vegas this week in search of quality competition.

On Thursday, The Inquirer's top-ranked baseball team found it, when Bishop Manogue of Reno, Nev., scored in the bottom of the seventh inning to hand the Rams their first loss, 3-2, in the Bishop Gorman Easter Classic.

Gloucester Catholic's aggressiveness on the basepaths resulted in a 2-0 first-inning lead, without the benefit of a hit. After Pat Kane was hit by a pitch, Brett Tenuto walked, and both advanced on a double steal.

Joe Brooks laid down a bunt to bring home the first run, and John Brue made it 2-0 with a fielder's choice groundout.

Chad Lewis, who hit a home run for Bishop Manogue, scored the game-winning run on Justin Thompson's single.

Mingo Bay Classic. Andrew Schorr stole three bases and scored twice, and Keith Michalski's fifth-inning single plated the eventual winning run, as Audubon edged Princeton, W. Va., 3-2, in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Tri-County. Daring baserunning by Ryan Hawthorne produced the game's lone run, and senior lefthander Ridge Herrman shut down Gloucester in leading Pennsville to a 1-0 road win.

Hawthorne singled, stole second and third, and raced home on an infield error in the fourth inning. Herrman struck out 11, hit one batter, and limited the Lions to two singles and a walk.

Austin Loatman pitched a five-inning perfect game and drove in five runs as visiting Schalick made quick work of Clayton, 20-0.

Olympic. Shane Hughes and Vinnie Nocella combined to bat 6 for 8, including three doubles, with five RBIs and three runs scored in Washington Township's 8-3 victory at Cherokee.

Burlington County. Starter T.J. Karwoski and reliever Austin Minton combined on a one-hit shutout, and Heath Fillmyer knocked in four runs as host Florence trounced Trenton Catholic, 9-0.

Winning pitcher Anthony Coniglio scored the go-ahead run on an error in the sixth inning, as Burlington City rallied late to overtake host Riverside, 5-4.

Joe Hummel picked up four RBIs on a double and a home run, and John Adryan drove in three runs with his fourth and fifth doubles of the season, as host Holy Cross crushed Cinnaminson, 11-1.

Nonleague. Eddie Lopizzo's two-run triple keyed a four-run eighth-inning rally, enabling Wildwood to outlast Pittsford Mendon (N.Y.), 8-6, in Orlando, Fla.

Kurtis Burnett drove in four runs with two doubles and an inside-the-park home run to highlight Willingboro's 8-6 win at Pennsauken Tech.

Lacrosse

Top-ranked St. Augustine wasted no time seizing control, storming out to an eight-goal lead en route to a 12-6 nonleague win at Ridgewood.

Mike Sutton (5 goals), Steve Pontrello (4 goals, 2 assists) and Bill McMenamin (3 goals) accounted for the Hermits' scoring.
