Paul VI's Cubbage commits to Wilmington

Roosevelt Cubbage, a 6-foot-7 senior from Paul VI, has accepted a basketball scholarship to Division II Wilmington University in Delaware.

Cubbage made an oral commitment to the school on Wednesday. According to NCAA rules, a basketball recruit may sign a letter of intent during the second signing period, beginning April 11.

Cubbage, who averaged nearly 12 points this season, is Paul VI's second scholarship player. Point guard Ron Curry has signed with James Madison.

"I chose Wilmington because I love the coach, their style of play, and felt like I could become a better person on and off the court at the school," Cubbage said.

Wilmington is coached by Mike Gallagher, who grew up in Haddonfield, attended Philadelphia's St. Joseph's Prep, and is a former head coach at Bishop Eustace and a former Paul VI assistant.

Gallagher has recruited the South Jersey area heavily. This season's team had three players who graduated from South Jersey high schools: sophomore guard Jarvis Perry of Willingboro, senior guard Corye Payton of Burlington Township, and junior forward Brandon Fox of Deptford.

In addition, former Pennsauken and Timber Creek coach Tim Dunne and former Washington Township and Sterling assistant Mark Napoleon are assistants to Gallagher at Wilmington.

Cubbage said he is projected to play both power forward and center. He was part of consecutive Olympic Conference National Division title teams at Paul VI.

A Camden resident, Cubbage also visited West Virginia Wesleyan.

"I felt great getting a full scholarship," he said. "It's great that my parents won't have to pay anything."
