BBCOR vs. BESR

StartText

Under the rules of the National Federation of High Schools, all high school baseball teams must use BBCOR-approved bats this season instead of the BESR-approved bats.

BBCOR (Batted Ball Coefficient of Restitution) measures the "bounciness" or "trampoline effect" of a bat. Under new BBCOR standards, the barrels of the bats won't be able to flex as much as under the BESR (Bat Exit Speed Ratio) standards.

The result is expected to be a sport that resembles baseball with wood bats, which were phased out of high school and college play in the mid-1970s.

The rule change was inspired by research done at the direction of the NCAA. The research showed that BESR-approved bats became more powerful over time, that use would increase the "trampoline effect" as the thin barrel would flex more upon impact with the ball.
