Sat. S.J. wrestling roundup: St. Augustine beats Paulsboro

Back-to-back pins by Tyler Sentman and James Bennett helped host St. Augustine hold off Paulsboro, 33-29, in a feature wrestling matchup on Saturday in a quad meet that also included Hammonton and Williamstown.

Each team won seven bouts, but the Hermits had four pins to Paulsboro's two to help provide the winning margin.

St. Augustine built a 21-9 lead with a key, 7-6 decision by Joseph Esposito at 138 pounds, pins by Sentman (160 pounds) and Bennett (170), plus Cory Pietrzyk's 3-2 win over Zach Funk at 182.

Paulsboro won five of the last seven bouts, but St. Augustine got pins by Thomas Lynd (Hwt.) and Tom Gattinella (113) to lead by 33-23 with two weights to go. When the Red Raiders' Zach Wellington won by decision at 120, the Hermits clinched the win.

Paulsboro rebounded with a 39-26 win over Hammonton, overcoming a 26-24 deficit in the last three weights with pins by John Gentile (106) and Sam Morina (113), and an 8-2 decision by Wellington.

Hammonton defeated St. Augustine, 39-25, to assure that no team went unbeaten for the day. The Blue Devils won five of the last six bouts to rally from a 22-9 deficit, including pins by Dave Williams at 182, Brian Beebe at 220, and Bobby Frederico at heavyweight.

Olympic. Eastern won seven bouts from Ferdinand Mase's technical fall at 106 pounds to Brock Worrell's pin at 145 to dominate a 47-27 win over Paul VI. The host Vikings, who also beat Triton, 52-21, got consecutive 2-0 decisions from Jacob Backal (132) and Michael Angelow (138).

Haddonfield spoiled Eastern's plans for a sweep of the quad meet with a 45-24 win over the Vikings. The Bulldogs got pins in the upper weights from Henry Klaus (170), Carson Stack (195) and Alex Klein (Hwt.).

Burlington County. Delran won just six of 14 bouts but edged Burlington Township, 36-35, to sweep a quad meet at Palmyra. The Bears also beat the host Panthers, 54-24, and topped Willingboro, 45-31.

Delran got pins by Jordan Weaver (120), Anthony Lehmann (160), Shaquille Lawrence (170) and Marquis Jackson (220) to beat Burlington Township, which had two pins.

Nonleague. Millville dominated a quad meet at Rancocas Valley with a 63-15 win over the Red Devils, a 50-30 win over Middle Township, and a 50-24 triumph over Penns Grove.

For The Thunderbolts, George Carty (138) and Ed Shockley (152) had three pins apiece, Elias Garcia (126) posted two pins and a technical fall, and Obie Kali (220) added two pins and a decision.

West Deptford used first-period pins by Tyler Kaminski (113) and Evan Zuzulock (120), plus Rory Bonner's pin with 37 seconds left at 182 to deal host Pennsville a 36-29 setback.

Consecutive pins by Cody Eastlack (Hwt.), Griffin Bonner (106), Kaminski and Zuzulock allowed West Deptford to pull away from Deptford, 49-22.

Pennsville bounced back with a 57-15 win over Deptford in which Jacob Samuels edged Vincent Feretti, 1-0, at 113 pounds, and Adain Feliciano (145) and Collin Bunch (170) added technical falls.

At Haddon Township, Egg Harbor Township beat Cape-Atlantic League rival Absegami for the first time in school history, 38-22, as Joseph Rocks (106) and Shawn Bryant (138) had major decisions, and Jason Cohen (145) and Nigel Toussaint (220) added first-minute pins.

The Eagles, who dropped Woodstown, 38-26, also defeated host Haddon Township, 35-29, with key last-minute pins by Gabe Zamot (120) and Brandon Bower (126), and decisions by one-point margins from Bryant (132) and German Rodriguez (Hwt.).

Haddon Heights grabbed three wins on its home mats, posting a 54-10 win over Lindenwold, a 45-27 victory over Schalick and a 58-18 success against Highland.

The Garnets' Daniel Hovern (106), Tyler Driver (160) and Padric Lynch (195) each had two pins and a decision.

Steffen Rodriguez (170) and Eugene Maisonave (285) pulled out close decisions to help Vineland nip host Lower Cape May, 36-33. Against Cedar Creek, Rodriguez moved up to 182 and posted one of the Clan's six pins in a 52-14 rout.

Zach Valcarce (120), Jackson Sole (152) and Cory Damiana (195) each posted three wins on the mat for Lower Cape May, which shook off the setback against Vineland to defeat Oakcrest, 43-22, and dispatch Cedar Creek, 55-15.

At Overbrook, Holy Spirit bested the host Rams, 46-36, nipped Atlantic City, 39-34, and turned back Ocean City, 44-27.

Garrett Paolone (120), Justin Phillips (126), Ed Sooy (132), Mac Ailes (195) and Dom LaFragola (285) accounted for nine pins, four decisions and two major decisions for the Spartans.
