Thurs. S.J. boys' and girls' roundup: Butler sets Palmyra mark

Butler has 79 goals, eclipsing the career mark of 78 set by Chelsea Grace in 2008.

Butler also had an assist, while Ricardo Margolles scored twice and Cody Kinkaide contributed a goal and two assists. Panthers goalie Tom Ewing made five saves in posting the shutout.

In another Burlco match, Holy Cross concluded its Patriot Division championship campaign at 9-0-1 by pulling out a 3-1 victory at Maple Shade.

Jon Mackie scored twice and set up Dan Schmid's goal, as the Lancers broke the game open in the second half.

Olympic. Mike Ryan, already Cherokee's all-time leading scorer, established the program's single-season mark with his 25th and 26th goals in a 5-1 win at Paul VI.

Kevin Lydic's 25 goals had stood as the Chiefs' standard since 2005.

Colonial. Anthony Colofranson's 40th goal of the season, and 65th of his career, tied the score midway through the second half and enabled host Gateway to draw Sterling, 2-2.

Field Hockey

Eighth-seeded Gloucester ratcheted up its attack in the second half, scoring three times after intermission to pull away from No. 9 seed Riverside, 4-1, in the opening round of the Central Jersey Group 1 tournament.

The Lions were led by Skyler Pino, who had a goal and an assist, and goalie Carly DeMarco (seven saves).

In other Central Jersey Group 1 openers:

Megan Anstotz, Mariah Thomas and Julie Johnson combined for six goals and two assists in powering No. 5 seed Audubon past 12th-seeded Woodbury, 7-0.

Sarah Gawrysiak had a pair of assists and Kaitlyn Brendlinger was perfect in goal to help No. 7 seed Haddon Township turn back 10th-seeded Burlington City, 4-0.

South Jersey Group 1. Annie Boyd led the way with three goals and one assist, as No. 7 seed Pitman pounded 10th-seeded Cedar Creek, 6-1, in an opening-round match.

Beth Patrick added a goal and an assist for the Panthers, who will travel to second-seeded Schalick for a quarterfinal on Tuesday.

Girls' Soccer

Host New Egypt used a balanced attack to crush Westampton Tech, 5-0, and keep its hopes alive in the Burlington County League Freedom Division.

Amber Steen supplied shutout goaltending and five players scored for the Warriors.

In other Burlco action:

Senior Mady Calhoun set a personal high with four goals in leading host Palmyra past Trenton Catholic, 5-1.

Stacie Johnson's first-half goal stood up, as McKenna Booker turned aside nine shots in Burlington City's 1-0 home win over Willingboro.

Colonial. Sophomore Alisha Fox had a hat trick to boost her season total to 20 goals, and Casey Pietroforte netted her 15th goal to carry Gateway to a 5-1 triumph at Sterling.

Penn-Jersey. Elena Zangerle's second goal of the match, with 10 minutes remaining in regulation, gave host Doane Academy its second consecutive league championship, 3-2, over Life Center.

Kick Start Tournament. Closing the book on Highland's season-opening tournament that began on Sept. 9, Pennsville captured third place by blanking Deptford, 2-0.

Chelsea Abhau and Casey Kisielewski each had a goal, while Dan Cornman notched the shutout with four saves.
