Kancylarz commits to St. Joe's

When Stefan Kancylarz digs into the box for the first at-bat of his senior season, he'll have one less thing on his mind.

Kancylarz, who was the shortstop and No. 3 hitter for Lenape's top-ranked team last spring, has committed to attend St. Joseph's on a baseball scholarship.

"It's like the pressure is lifted off my shoulders," said Kancylarz, who also is Lenape's quarterback. "Now I can just focus on performing well and not have to worry about the pressure that's involved with deciding on college."

Kancylarz, who throws right and bats left, said St. Joseph's had recruited him as a middle infielder. He plans to study secondary education.

Kancylarz was a top player as a junior for a Lenape team that went 23-5, won the Olympic American and Joe Hartmann Diamond Classic titles, and was No. 1 in South Jersey in The Inquirer's final top 10.

"It's been a joy to coach Stef," Lenape baseball coach Phil Fiore said. "He's an all-around ballplayer whose work ethic is second to none."

Kancylarz said he expected to sign with St. Joseph's on Wednesday, a national signing day for spring sports.
