S. Jersey Girls: Pitman blanks Woodstown in field hockey

Sarah Traynor anchored the Pitman defense with five saves in goal, marking the Panthers' fifth straight shutout.

Michelle Stafford also scored a goal and Alexa Swartz had an assist.

The Panthers, seeded sixth in an eight-team field, had dropped a 1-0 regular-season verdict to third-seeded Woodstown. With the victory, the Panthers moved to the sectional semifinals against Schalick.

Schalick advanced with a 4-0 triumph over visiting Gateway.

Joyce Perry and Victoria Wright each had a goal and an assist, and Laura Olbrich and Valerie Orth also scored goals as part of the Cougars' 17-shot attack.

Also in Group 1, St. Joseph ousted visiting Pennsville, 5-0, with two first-half scores by Marissa Morena, Megan DeMarco's goal and an assist, and goalie Becky Boffo's 11th shutout. The win gave the Wildcats (20-0) the first 20-win season in the school's 40-year history.

Salem squeezed past visiting Glassboro, 3-2, as Shaqui Coppage provided all three goals, assisted twice by Monique Lusby.

Central Jersey Group 1. Haddon Township needed Brelyn Howard's third goal of the game, coming 49 seconds into the second overtime period, to escape from Moorestown Friends with a 3-2 quarterfinal win.

Township had more corners, 20-7, over Friends, which got goals by Kathrine Churchill and Maddie Galvin.

Top-seeded New Egypt, a 3-1 winner over visiting Riverside, will be Haddon Township's semifinal opponent. The Warriors' Katelyn Buschoff had a goal and an assist.

Angela Harris scored off Emily Bucher's assist with 3:18 left in the first half for the deciding goal in Gloucester's 2-0 win over visiting Holy Cross. Bucher added a second-half insurance goal.

Tennis

Millville blanked host Oakcrest, 5-0, and claimed a share of the Cape-Atlantic League American Conference championship with Mainland.
