Fri. S.J. football roundup: Paul VI wins on fourth-quarter surge

The Vikings (0-6), loking for their first win, grabbed a 14-6 first-quarter lead with a pair of TD passes by Garret Stein, but failed to reach the end zone the rest of the way.

In the fourth period, Burroughs scored on a 1-yard run to tie the score at 14-14, and Anderson helped the unbeaten Eagles (5-0) avoid an upset loss with a game-winning 10-yard touchdown run.

For Paul VI, James Kenner gained 125 yards on 11 carries on offense, and made eight tackles and forced two fumbles on defense.

Pennsville 21, Glassboro 12 - In a matchup of unbeaten division champions, Ryan Hawthorne keyed a second-quarter explosion that allowed host Pennsville to hold off Glassboro, 21-12.

Hawthorne followed up his 12-yard scoring scamper with a 15-yard TD pass to Colton Newsome, giving the Eagles (6-0) a 21-0 halftime lead. Glassboro (5-1) mounted a third-quarter comeback with a pair of touchdown runs by Christian James.

Winslow Township 29, Lenape 19 - Bill Belton threw a pair of touchdown passes and ran for two TDs, including a 42-yard jaunt that closed out the scoring in the fourth quarter, as the Eagles (4-2) rallied at Lenape (2-3).

Nick Wagner had 22 carries for 130 yards and two touchdowns for the Indians, who finished with 205 yards on the ground.

Gloucester 48, Clayton 20 - Steve Kumpf rushed for 214 yards and three touchdowns, and Brandon Blackiston came through with his sixth interception of the season, as the host Lions (3-3) mauled Clayton (1-4).

Cherokee 35, Cherry Hill West 6 - Andy Martin passed for a pair of TDs in the first half and Mike Zeuli returned the second-half kickoff back 75 yards for a score, as the Cheifs (5-0) rolled at Cherry Hill West (0-5).

Seneca 21, Gloucester Catholic 13 - Second-half touchdown runs by Charlie Owl and Steve Greco boosted Seneca (2-4) past visiting Gloucester Catholic (1-5).

The Rams started the game with a 95-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by John DeLaurentis before Seneca answered with 21 straight points.

Owl scored on runs of 13 and 4 yards, and Greco's 55-yard TD dash boosted the lead to 21-7 in the final period.

Cinnaminson 34, Maple Shade 2 - In the last five minutes of the first half, Kyle Yansick ran 18 yards for a touchdown and caught a 3-yard TD pass from Dominic Elly (3 for 9, 49 yards passing) to open the scoring for visiting Cinnaminson (3-3).

Elly also carried the ball 16 times for 112 and a touchdown, while the defense held the Wildcats (1-5) to 98 total yards.

Burlington Twp. 14, Northern Burlington 3 - Brian Verbitski tossed a 40-yard touchdown pass to Vinnie Pini with 3:40 left to wrap up Township's comeback win over the visiting Greyhounds (2-3).

Trailing by 3-0 after three quarters, Township (4-2) took the lead on Verbitski's 2-yard sneak.

New Egypt 19, Allentown 0 - New Egypt (4-1) handed host Allentown (5-1), the Colonial Division champion, its first loss in an interdivision shutout.

After losing by shutout to Willingboro a week earlier, the Warriors rebounded behind Dylan Willis' TD pass to Quinten Hatt, and a pair of second-half touchdown runs by Jamel Smith.

Robbinsville 35, Burlington City 23 - Ryan Zuczek ran for two touchdowns and grabbed a 50-yard pass from Brett Dawidowski for another, sparking visiting Robbinsville (2-4) past the Blue Devils (2-3).

For City, Pedro Perez threw for one TD and ran for another, and Shaquille Butler returned a punt 55 yards for a score.

Colonial

Haddonfield posted its third shutout of the season and got a balanced offensive attack from Kevin Davis and Chris Dengler en route to a 13-0 Colonial Conference interdivision win at Lindenwold.

Davis completed half of his 14 passes for 75 yards, including a 21-yard touchdown pass to Dengler, who also gained 102 yards rushing on 28 carries. Matt Bhaya booted a pair of field goals.

For Lindenwold, Jason Hutzler passed for 216 yards on 19-for-38 accuracy, including six catches by Bruce Hicks for 57 yards.

Audubon 41, Sterling 13 - Chris Borgesi returned two kickoffs for touchdowns and Audubon added another score via a fumble return in the victory at Sterling (0-5).

Borgesi, who also caught two TD passes from Charles Slack, sprinted 90 and 94 yards on his kickoff returns.

West Deptford 61, Gateway 0 - Vaughn Scott ran for a pair of touchdowns in a 34-point first-quarter blitz, as the host Eagles (5-0) built a 51-0 halftime lead.

The Gators (0-5) have been outscored, 95-0, over their last two games.

Cape-Atlantic

Jamil Bailey raced 80 yards with a kickoff return in the fourth quarter to end Egg Harbor Township's hopes of a comeback as host Atlantic City (5-0, 3-0) captured a 20-7 victory in Division I.

Bailey also scored the game's first points with a 4-yard TD plunge in the opening period.

The Eagles (4-2, 2-2) closed the gap to 14-7 early in the fourth quarter on Stephan Thomas' 1-yard touchdown, setting the stage for Bailey's kickoff return. Thomas was held to 31 yards rushing, and EHT quarterback John Kopistecki threw for 138 yards.

St. Joseph 41, Lower Cape May 10 - In Division III, the division-leading Wildcats (4-1, 3-0) handed host Cape May (4-1, 1-1) its first loss behind three touchdowns by Gordon Hill.

Hill sprinted 68 yards with a fumble to open the scoring, and added a pair of 1-yard TD runs. Mike Mulligan launched an 83-yard TD pass to Jordan Hazel, and the St. Joseph special teams contributed to the scoring when Corey Litton recovered a blocked punt in the end zone.

Holy Spirit 42, Mainland 0 - Donta Pollack ran for five touchdowns that covered a total of 43 yards and teammate Nigel Jones dashed 45 yards for another score, carrying the Spartans (5-0, 2-0) past the host Mustangs (3-3, 1-3) in a Division II clash.
