Shultz named Cherokee boys’ coach

Matt Shultz, an assistant at Cherokee last season, has been named the school's head boys' basketball coach.

Matt Shultz, an assistant at Cherokee last season, has been named the school's head boys' basketball coach.

Shultz replaces legendary Ron Powell, who resigned after guiding Cherokee to the state Group 4 championship, the first in school history, last season.

Powell is the only boys' basketball coach in South Jersey history to win state championships at two schools, also earning two in the '90s at Rancocas Valley. Powell's career record at both schools was 437-240.

"It's a huge challenge following in the footsteps of Ron Powell and coming off a season in which we graduated nine seniors," Shultz said. "I'm really looking forward to it."

Shultz is also the defensive coordinator for the football team and an assistant softball coach.

He is a 1991 graduate of Washington Township, where he played football, baseball, and basketball. Shultz was also a three-year starter at West Chester University, where he played mainly linebacker.

He had been an assistant at Cherokee for eight seasons and previously was an assistant football and basketball coach at West Deptford.
