Burlington Township, a team that would not have been eligible to play in the NJSIAA boys' soccer tournament this year without a change in the qualifying rules, will play for the South Jersey Group 3 title after shocking host Central Regional, 1-0, Tuesday.

Christian Montemore scored the goal in the fourth minute of the sectional semifinal game from in close after taking a sharp pass from Brendan Stringfellow.

Falcons goalie Mike Dipaola made seven saves vs. top-seeded Central. The defense for No. 13 seed Township has allowed one goal in three tournament games.

"Our defense has been playing great the past couple of games," Falcons coach Jon Marx said. Sweeper "Mike Kara and [stopper] Matt Lynch have played tough every game, and I can't say enough about Bobby Foster, our captain. He's the blood and guts of our team."

Burlington Township (8-7-3) had a sub-.500 record (5-6-3) on the Oct. 23 tournament qualifying date. In previous seasons, only teams with a record of .500 or better qualified for the tournament, but the field was expanded this fall to the top 16 teams in each group, regardless of record.

"When you play in the [Burlington County League] Liberty Division," Marx said, "anything's possible. We were challenged in every game during the regular season, and I think our performance in the tournament so far speaks to the quality of our division."

In other Group 3 action, 11th-seeded Moorestown also pulled off a surprise, ousting host Point Pleasant Boro, the No. 2 seed, 1-0.

Pablo Zegarra scored the goal in the 20th minute, knocking in a shot from 16 yards after a throw-in was headed to him by a defender.

Quakers goalie Tommy Hand made five saves in the team's ninth shutout.

South Jersey Group 1. After dropping a pair of regular-season matchups to New Egypt, visiting Palmyra rebounded with a 1-0 verdict over the second-seeded Warriors.

Ryan Butler scored the goal unassisted in the ninth minute, and the third-seeded Panthers' defense, anchored by two saves from goalie Tim Brett, handled the rest.

Palmyra is just the second team to hold New Egypt scoreless this fall.

Pitman advanced via a 2-1 thriller over visiting Penns Grove. Kyle McAvinue snapped a 1-1 tie on a goal with 12 minutes to play off an assist by Eric Todd, who also assisted Roy Langlois' score.

South Jersey Group 2. Haddon Township goalie Nick Skabla stopped three penalty kicks in the best-of-five tiebreaker to give the visiting Hawks the edge over top-seeded Woodstown.

The teams played to a 2-2 tie through regulation and overtime before Chris Murphy, Joe Bernhardt and Nick DellaValle converted Haddon Township penalty kicks for a 3-1 advantage.

Woodstown got goals from Drew Geiger and Zach Smick, and Murphy and Jay Casey scored in the second half for the fourth-seeded Hawks.

West Deptford also advanced, 5-2, over visiting Buena behind Ryan Kelly's three-goal performance.

Trevor Fahey and Jake Perry also scored, and Tim Krott notched a pair of assists as part of the Eagles' 30-shot attack against the Chiefs.

South Jersey Group 4. Lenape erupted for four first-half goals and cruised into the title game with a 4-0 success against visiting Millville.

Steve Kramitz scored twice, and Rocco Gambino and Shane Casey chipped in with one each for the Indians, who got a combined five saves from goalies Taylor Edwards and Brady White.

Central Jersey Group 2. Delran built an 18-5 advantage in shots but needed goals from Joe Hockimer and Mike Perreira to edge visiting North Plainfield, 2-1. Goalie Brad Schmidt made four saves.

Central Jersey Group 4. Manny Payton got loose for four goals and dominated Rancocas Valley's 5-2 semifinal victory over visiting Marlboro.

Alec Golini had three assists, Doug Jones scored a goal, and goalies Jake Kapulskey and Ryan Sanders combined for 10 saves.

South Jersey Non-Public B. Sacred Heart defeated visiting Wildwood Catholic for the third time this season, 3-1.

Nick Gazzara, Mike Mazzochi and Mike Rothman provided the Lions' goals, while goalie Jesse Dickinson stopped nine of 10 shots.

Top-seeded St. Rose of Belmar ended visiting Holy Cross' season, 3-0.Girls roundupMoorestown faced a familiar foe in Tuesday's NJSIAA Central Jersey Group 3 field hockey final, and for the second consecutive season the Quakers had their title hopes dashed by Wall Township.

After the teams traded single goals in the second half of regulation and went scoreless in two overtime periods, Wall Township's Erika Thompson converted her penalty stroke - allowing the top-seeded Crimson Knights to take the crown.

Jenna Dougherty connected off a pass from Paige Schlesinger for Moorestown, which applied plenty of offensive pressure, as evidenced by the 27 saves recorded by Wall netminder Ashley Camano. Kristin LaRosa was nearly equal to the challenge, stopping 18 shots for the second-seeded Quakers (15-4). The Crimson Knights' lone score in regulation came on a penalty stroke in the second half by Erika Thompson.

It was the fifth time over the last eight seasons that the two schools met with in a sectional championship game. Moorestown dominated the first three head-to-head battles, outscoring Wall by 15-3 in capturing three titles. But the Crimson Knights turned the tables last season with a 3-2 overtime victory.

Wall moves on to face South Jersey champion Ocean City Thursday in a state semifinal at Neptune.

Central Jersey Group 4. Lenape's roller-coaster season came to an abrupt end with a 3-1 loss at third-seeded Freehold Township in the final.

The fourth-seeded Indians (11-7-3), who were unable to string together more than three wins in a row this season while competing in the rugged Olympic Conference, couldn't overcome a 2-1 halftime deficit.

It was the first time the two teams met with a sectional title on the line.

Allie Miller had a hat trick for Freehold Township, which will take on another Olympic Conference squad - South Jersey champion Eastern - in a state semifinal Thursday at Shawnee.
