Ocean City wins field hockey crown
OCEAN CITY, N.J. - Same opponent, same site, same result.
Still, there was nothing boring or routine Tuesday for the Ocean City field hockey team as it won the NJSIAA South Jersey Group 3 championship.
"It's my third one, and it's always amazing," said senior forward Colleen Slaughter, who scored both goals in the 2-0 victory over Kingsway.
Ocean City (20-1) rode Slaughter's goals and record-tying goalkeeping by senior Natalie Hunter to its ninth sectional title, including its fourth in the last five years.
Ocean City and Kingsway have played in this game five times in the last seven years, with the Red Raiders winning the last three. The Dragons won in 2003 and '04.
"It's become such a good rivalry," Ocean City coach Trish LeFever said.
Ocean City, which has won 15 games in a row, advances to the state semifinals Thursday against the Central Jersey champion, Wall Township, a winner over Moorestown. The game is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Neptune High.
Kingsway, which had won 12 in a row, finished 17-4.
"We just couldn't put the ball in the cage," coach Sara Lewis said. "I thought we dominated the game in a lot of ways."
Slaughter scored her goals in the first half. The first was on a penalty stroke, while the second came on a scramble in the circle off a nice feed from Jenn Staub.
Ocean City held an 8-0 advantage in corners in the first half of the game, which was played on the Red Raiders' grass field at the town's intermediate school.
Kingsway rallied in the second half, creating eight corners to four for Ocean City.
Midfielder Aubrey Coleman generated a few good chances, but Hunter made a great save on one shot, and a couple of others rolled wide of the cage.
"My heart was probably pounding a lot faster," Hunter said of Kingsway's pressure in the second half.
Hunter finished with three saves to register the 53d shutout of her career, tying a school record. The Red Raiders also got a strong game from senior defender Danielle McNally.
"I can't do it without my defense," said Hunter, who is headed to Maryland. "Anything that I accomplish, they accomplish."
Slaughter said the victory was special because of the rivalry between the programs.
"It seems like we always play them," Slaughter said. "It's great, because they are such a good team and we know their players. It makes it more fun."
LeFever said the Red Raiders didn't take sectional titles for granted, even though they had won them regularly in recent years.
"This is what we shoot for," LeFever said. "But it's still so exciting. It's just as exciting as the first one."
