For So. Jersey grid teams, key games loom
This is cutoff weekend in South Jersey football with playoff berths determined. Some teams are competing for both a playoff spot and a division championship.
Is it us, or has this football season flown by?
Anyway, the teams with the eight highest power ratings in each Group qualify, provided there are eight with a .500 or better record.
For instance the eight teams are set in South Jersey Group 2, but their final seeding won't be determined until after this weekend's games.
The only thing more difficult than earning a playoff spot, is figuring out the power ratings, but we'll have our projections on Sunday. Until then, enjoy Week 9 of the South Jersey football season.
Palmyra (5-2 overall, 4-0 Burlco/Olympic Freedom) at Florence (4-3, 3-1), 7 p.m. Friday. Both teams are in the hunt for the Burlco/Olympic Freedom Division and a postseason spot – Palmyra in SJ Group 1 and Florence in CJ Group 1. Palmyra was supposed to be rebuilding, but the Panthers would earn at least a share of the division title with a win.
Pick: Florence 16, Palmyra 14.
Bishop Eustace (6-1 overall, 4-0 Burlco/Olympic National) at Camden Catholic (4-3, 3-1), 7 p.m Friday. Eustace has already clinched at least a share of the National Division. Camden Catholic would earn a share with a win. Eustace needs to control the clock and junior Sean Bell (930 yards rushing, 11 TDs, 7.56 average) will obviously play a key role. The winner is a likely qualifier in Non-Public Group 3. Eustace can still qualify with a loss, but Camden Catholic must win to stay in contention.
Pick: Camden Catholic 28, Bishop Eustace 26.
St. Augustine (7-0 overall, 5-0 Cape National) at Holy Spirit (6-1, 5-1), 7 p.m. Friday. The winner of this game would claim the Cape National title. In addition, the winner will be in the running to host a first-round playoff home game. St. Augustine is already in the Non-Public Group 4 playoffs, while Holy Spirit hasn't mathematically qualified yet in Non-Public Group 3. St. Augustine's Dustin Thomas will look to add to his South Jersey career touchdown passing total, which now stands at 67.
Pick: St. Augustine 24, Holy Spirit 22.
Winslow Township (3-4) at Eastern (5-2), 7 p.m. Friday. Eastern would likely qualify in SJ Group 4 with a win, while Winslow Township must win and then get help form other teams to get in SJ Group 3. With dangerous quarterback Bill Belton, Winslow Township is averaging 34 points, so expect plenty of offense.
Pick: Eastern 35, Winslow Township 34.
Lenape (2-5) at Seneca (5-2), 7 p.m Friday. This is a trap game for Seneca, coming off an emotional 14-7 win over Shawnee that clinched at least a tie for the Burlco/Olympic Liberty Division. Lenape has been more competitive than the record suggests, but stopping a Seneca ground game averaging 6.03 yards per carry led by Steve Greco (707 yards, 8 TDs) will be difficult.
Pick: Seneca 14, Lenape 7.
Absegami (4-3 overall, 4-2 Cape American) at Mainland (4-3, 4-2), 7 p.m. Friday. Both teams have some playoff hopes, but likely also need Eastern to lose to Winslow Township and Southern to fall to Howell (6-1). Mainland is the defending SJ Group 4 champion, but the Mustangs were hit hard by graduation and have done well to still be contending for a spot on cutoff weekend.
Pick: Mainland 24, Absegami 21.
Highland (5-3 overall, 3-3 Trico Royal) at Gloucester Catholic (5-2, 4-2) 2:30 p.m. Saturday. Since playoff teams are judged only on their first eight games, Highland won't earn any points for beating the Rams, which means the Tartans need a lot of teams to lose to qualify in SJ Group 3. Gloucester Catholic's two losses are to The Inquirer's top two teams, Williamstown and Delsea and the Rams have already qualified in Non-Public Group 2, where they will be dangerous. Highland's Sean Daniels has rushed for 1,094 yards and 12 TDs while averaging 8.75 yards per carry.
Pick: Highland 28, Gloucester Catholic 24.
Last week: 5-2.
Season: 48-20
