Amanda Rencher carried the day for
Pitman, picking up three victories and garnering most valuable player honors in leading the Panthers to the softball championship at yesterday's Palmyra Invitational.
In a 6-2 title-game triumph over
Sacred Heart, Rencher struck out six in going the distance, and batted 3 for 3, scored twice and roped a two-run double in Pitman's five-run third-inning rally.
Rencher tossed four innings of no-hit ball in a 19-1 first-round rout of
Pemberton, and followed with a two-hit shutout as the Panthers rolled over
Maple Shade, 12-0, in the semifinals.
Maple Shade rebounded to defeat
Palmyra, 7-2, in the third-place game behind a pair of triples by Colleen Sweeney.
Highland Tournament. Winning pitcher Devon Coyle hit a two-run home run in the first inning and Brooke Szymanski added a three-run shot in the second, putting
Audubon on track for a 7-5 triumph over
Highland in the third-place game. Coyle and Szymanski were chosen to the all-tournament team.
In a semifinal, Meredith McCarthy drove in two runs with a triple and a sacrifice fly, and Gabby Sapienza tossed a three-hit shutout as
Bishop Eustace blanked Audubon, 2-0.
Cape-Atlantic. Nicole Pagano posted her 10th no-hitter of the season and raised her record to 18-1, recording 14 strikeouts and one walk in
St. Joseph's 4-0 victory at
Buena.
Pagano also picked up a pair of singles and drove in one run for the Wildcats, who made the most of their six hits.
Track and Field
Shannon Grogan finished first in the 100-, 200- and 400-meter events and ran a leg on the winning 4x400 relay team, as
Holy Cross blistered the field to take the Burlington County League's Patriot Division team crown.
The Lancers collected eight victories, including a pair by Rose Johnson (400 hurdles and high jump).
Emily Ivins won the 800 and 3,200 in leading
Florence to the Freedom Division crown.
The Liberty Division title went to
Burlington Township, with Tiffany Chamberlain prevailing in both the 100 and 400 hurdles events.
