Koerner on list of 13 inductees to county shrine

The former Washington Twp. two-sport star will enter the Gloucester County Sports Hall.

Mike Koerner, a former Washington Township High football and baseball standout who later played in the Los Angeles Dodgers' farm system, and three former Pitman athletes will be among the 13 members inducted into the Gloucester County Sports Hall of Fame on March 18.

The 28th annual induction banquet will be held at Auletto's Caterers in Almonesson, and tickets are available by calling 856-435-3367.

Here is a look at this year's inductees:

Ron Mitchell: A former standout player and coach at Gloucester County College, Mitchell entered the current season as Coppin's all-time winningest coach with 318 career victories; his teams have notched three NCAA tournament appearances, two NIT bids and six 20-win seasons.

Mike Koerner: A 1994 Washington Township graduate, Koerner was named South Jersey's offensive player of the year in 1993, leading the area with 32 touchdowns. In baseball, he was named South Jersey's player of the year in 1994 and later starred as a center fielder at Louisiana State University, starting on the 1996 and 1997 NCAA national championship teams. In college, he batted .352 and later played in the Los Angeles Dodgers' farm system.

Jason Poles: A multi-sport athlete at Delsea, Poles was a standout on the Crusaders' championship teams in football in the 1990s, especially on defense, where he was one of South Jersey's premier defensive backs. A 1994 Delsea grad, Poles earned a scholarship to Syracuse University, playing on the same team with Donovan McNabb and earning all-Big East honors in 1998. Poles played with the New York Jets for a brief period.

Bruce Eckman: A member of Pitman's Class of 1965, Eckman was an outstanding performer in football, basketball, and track. In football, he co-captained the Panthers' 1964 South Jersey Group 1 championship team and was named an all-South Jersey and all-state offensive tackle and linebacker. He also led the Panthers to league titles in basketball, and helped his team to a South Jersey Group 1 crown in track, throwing the discus and shot put. Eckman later started in football and lacrosse at Princeton.

Fred Hasher: One of South Jersey's top all-around athletes in the 1950s, Hasher excelled in football, baseball, basketball and track for Pitman prior to his graduation in 1954. Hasher served in the military and later played basketball at North Greenville (S.C.) Junior College and pitched for Furman University.

Lynda LeVan: A 1982 Pitman graduate, LeVan excelled in three sports, winning a total of 10 varsity letters. She co-captained the 1981 Panthers' field hockey team that won the South Jersey and NJSIAA Group 1 state championships. LeVan also hit .492 with 29 steals her senior season on the softball team and was a starter on the girls' basketball team. She played two seasons on a field hockey scholarship at the University of Delaware.

Glenn Esgro: Esgro was one of South Jersey's premier catchers in the mid-1980s while at Glassboro High, earning all-South Jersey and all-state honors in his junior and senior seasons and earning a baseball scholarship to the University of Richmond. At Glassboro, he was a star linebacker and end.

Arnold Divers: One of South Jersey's top football prospects in the 1950s, Divers excelled offensively and defensively for Clayton teams that were consistent challengers for the Tri-County Conference championship. Also a track star, Divers won South Jersey Group 1 titles in the mile and the 880 events in 1956 and 1957, respectively. He played collegiate football at Virginia State University.

Jack Hickl: A multi-sport athlete at Clayton who graduated in 1968, Hickl starred in football, baseball and basketball. As a senior, he averaged 21.8 points per game in basketball, earning all-conference honors, while also earning all-star honors as a quarterback on the football team and as a pitcher-third baseman on the baseball squad. At Lafayette, he played quarterback and was a kick returner and earned three varsity letters in baseball.

Rich Anastasia: Anastasia was an outstanding lineman at Woodbury during the Thundering Herd's glory years under coach Jim Combs. A 1963 graduate, he earned all-South Jersey and all-state honors. Also a standout wrestler and a baseball player at Woodbury, Anastasia graduated from West Point in 1967 and was a decorated officer during the Vietnam conflict in the late 1960s.

Tom Rende: One of South Jersey's top wrestling coaches in the 1970s, Rende guided Gateway from 1969-1977 after he helped start the school's program along with former coach Chuck Williamson. At Gateway, he posted an overall record of 79-38, won five Olympic Conference National Division crowns, and coached 18 district and three regional individual champions.

Nancy Wilkins: A 1976 Gateway graduate, Wilkins starred in tennis and basketball during her scholastic career. At Elizabethtown College, she led her women's tennis team to an NCAA Division III national championship and placed fourth nationally in 1980 in individual NCAA singles' competition.

Don Bills: Bills served as the Clearview girls' basketball coach for 18 seasons, posting a 205-163 record. He also contributed 12 years as the boys' assistant coach. His girls' teams won four Tri-County Royal titles from 1984-92, qualifying for the South Jersey playoffs in 12 of his 18 seasons. Bills' Pioneers reached the South Jersey Group 2 finals in 1990, and his clubs had winning campaigns in 15 of his 18 seasons.
