Wed. Pa. boys' roundup: Springfield (D) nips Octorara in Class AAA semi
At West Chester East, third-seeded Springfield (Delaware County) outlasted No. 2 Octorara, 46-44, Wednesday in a District 1 Class AAA semifinal.
The Cougars (18-7), who have won 14 of their last 16 games, got 18 points from Wally Rutecki and 12 from Zack DeVito.
It was the 12th game this season that they've played a game when the outcome was decided by five points or fewer, winning six and losing six.
They will face top-seeded Holy Ghost Prep on Saturday in the championship game at Villanova.
Octorara, as one of the top four seeds, got a first-round bye but followed that up with a 59-30 win over Lower Moreland in its only other playoff game.
The Cougars also earned a bye in the first round and defeated Phoenixville, 59-53, in the second round.
Ice Hockey
Teddy Smith's two goals powered Radnor to a 4-1 win over rival Ridley in a Central League playoff semifinal at the Ice Works in Aston (Delaware County).
The Red Raiders (12-6-2) also got a goal from Nick Lombardi and one from Billy Curtis.
Noah Klag was exceptional in goal for Radnor, turning back 29 of the 30 shots he faced.
Thursday's championship game, also at the Ice Works, will feature Radnor and Haverford High.
