Fri. Pa. football roundup: Brumfield lead Roberts past Marple Newtown
In District 1 Class AAA football, it was the Ryan Brumfield show once again for host Owen J. Roberts in a 34-7 first-round win over Marple Newtown Friday night.
After the No. 3-seed Wildcats (10-1) spotted the No. 6 Tigers (7-4) a 7-0 lead, Brumfield took over, scoring on runs of 3, 3, 77, 17 and 2 yards and finished with 251 yards on 17 carries.
Owen J. Roberts will play either Interboro or Academy Park in a second-round game next weekend.
Pottsgrove 21, Upper Moreland 14 - The top-seeded Falcons (11-0) needed to rally from a 14-7 deficit as Maika Polamalu scored on a 6-yard run with 40 seconds left to break a 14-14 tie.
Pottsgrove advances to the second round against either West Chester Rustin or Upper Perkiomen.
Nonleague
Ernesto Garcia touched the ball just eight times, but accounted for three touchdowns to allow Lincoln coach Gene Kelly to ride off into retirement with a 41-8 win over visiting Fels.
Garcia, who rushed for 50 yards, scored on runs of 3 and 12 yards in the first quarter when Lincoln (7-4) was taking a 27-0 lead, then added a 15-yard scoring run in the second quarter.
Omar Black also had a big game for the Railsplitters, returning a pair of punts 33 and 61 yards for touchdowns. His last came with 9 minutes left in the half, giving Lincoln a 41-0 lead. Black had three returns totaling 115 yards. Hakeem Cooper had two catches for 40 yards, but one of those catches covered 30 yards and resulted in a touchdown in the first quarter.
Jamiel Hines caught a 42-yard touchdown pass from Marc Prompt in the final quarter to help the Panthers (2-8) avert the shutout.
Southern 12, Mastbaum 6 - Sean Allen caught a 10-yard touchdown pass from Shaquille Gaskins for the game-winning points with 3 minutes, 30 seconds left in the game and lifted the Rams (6-4) past the Panthers (2-8) at Charlie Martin Memorial Stadium.
Gaskins, who scored on a 30-yard keeper in the third quarter to tie the game, 6-6, intercepted a Mastbaum pass tipped at the goal line by Kenny Johnson and returned it 35 yards where he took a knee three times to end the game.
Upper Darby 7, Spring-Ford 0 - Anthony Green took the ball into the end zone with 3:40 left in the game to boost the Royals (2-9) past the host Rams (3-8).
Green scored from the 15-yard line to cap a 75-yard drive that lasted 7:25. Green finished the game with 87 yards rushing.
Archbishop Ryan 17, Central Bucks West 0 - The visiting Raiders (1-10) used a terrific overall game from Mark Golic to record their first win of the season in a battle between 0-10 teams.
Golic scored on runs of 26 and 78 yards and intercepted a pass at the goal line when the Raiders held a 10-0 lead late in the third quarter.
In between, Bruce Barras hit a field goal from 40 yards out with 10 yards to spare.
Frankford 27, Central 6 - The Pioneers (5-6) recovered sufficiently from its Public League semifinal playoff loss to Northeast last week to get past the visiting Lancers (6-4).
Ronnie Mack got Frankford on the board when he scored on a 20-yard run in the first quarter. Zaire Anderson chipped in with a 5-yard scoring run in the second quarter and Michael McGroarty contributed a 23-yard touchdown sprint to give Frankford a 21-0 lead in the third quarter.
Shawn Johnson represented the defense in the final quarter when he lugged a fumble into the end zone from a yard out.
