Old-timers recognize Chris LaPierre, even if some of them don't get that sport with the stick with the webbed pocket. LaPierre is a sportsman in the classic sense. He's The Inquirer's Male Athlete of the Year in South Jersey not only for his excellence on the football and lacrosse fields, but also for his grace, class and team-first attitude. "A true gentleman," said Tim Gushue, who was LaPierre's head coach in football and lacrosse during the athlete's four years at Shawnee High School.
Alyssa Ogle was able to pull off the difficult feat of competing with intensity while showing congeniality. Unrelenting as a competitor, Ogle also knew how to have fun. Through four years at Moorestown she earned 12 varsity letters, all-American status, several championships and more importantly the undying respect of those whose job it was to guide her teams. Ogle was recently named The Inquirer’s South Jersey lacrosse player of the year and now she has added the bigger prize, this season’s Inquirer South Jersey senior Female Athlete of the Year.
The Inquirer’s Runner of the Year in cross country. Won South Jersey Group 3 title. Placed second in Group 3 state meet and fourth in Meet of Champions. Also South Jersey Group 3 champion in 1,600 meters in outdoor track. Missed track Meet of Champions with foot injury. Headed to Virginia to run cross country and track.
Duffey is a three-sport athlete who has earned 11 varsity letters, three in soccer and four each in indoor track and lacrosse. She was limited to six games this season in lacrosse after contacting pneumonia, but still scored 34 goals in six games. Duffey finished her career with 240 goals. She was also a key member of the indoor track team’s 1,600 and 3,200 relay teams and the distance medley.
First-team All-South Jersey selection by The Inquirer in football as a wide receiver. Set South Jersey record for most points by a non-back with 149. Caught 45 passes for 981 yards and 17 touchdowns. Also first-team All-South Jersey selection by The Inquirer in baseball as an outfielder. Batted .385 this season with 8 home runs, 31 RBIs and 23 steals. Headed to Villanova on a football scholarship but also might try to play baseball for the Wildcats.
Rouh was an Inquirer first-team all-South Jersey selection in lacrosse after leading South Jersey with 106 goals. She helped a young Eastern team to a 14-6 record and a No. 28 ranking in the state by Laxpower.com. Rouh was a starter on defense on Eastern’s field hockey team that was The Inquirer's No. 1 ranked South Jersey team and won the Tournament of Champions title. She has earned a field hockey scholarship to Rutgers.
Three-sport star for the Panthers. First-team All-South Jersey by The Inquirer in football as a defensive back. Led Panthers to Burlco/Olympic Freedom Division title. Set Palmyra career record with 20 interceptions. Averaged 20.8 points as a point guard in basketball. Key member of track team. Headed to Rutgers on a football scholarship.
Torosian was The Inquirer’s South Jersey player of the year in soccer. Known for her unselfish play, Torosian totaled 11 goals and 17 assists, Torosian was named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) all-American team. She led Lenape to consecutive state Group 4 titles and this year’s team went 25-0 and was ranked No. 7 nationally by the NSCAA. She has earned a soccer scholarship to the University of Florida.
Recently selected by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim with the 25th pick in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. The Inquirer’s Player of the Year in baseball. Set South Jersey record with 18 home runs. Batted .531 with 45 RBIs and 49 runs as well as 19 stolen bases. Has baseball scholarship offer from East Carolina. Also a first-team All-Cape Atlantic League selection in basketball.
A three-sport athlete who was an Inquirer first-team all-South Jersey selection in lacrosse after totaling 65 goals and 41 assists. She finished with 270 career goals and 121 assists. Tumolo was a second-team all-conference midfielder in soccer and helped the Pioneers win the Tri-County Royal Division title. Tumolo was recently named to the Under Armour All-American Lacrosse Classic. She has earned a lacrosse scholarship to Syracuse University.
