Penn State and new Big Ten rival Rutgers will open the 2014 conference season under the lights on Sept. 13 in Piscataway, N.J.

The game will kick off at 8 p.m. at High Point Solutions Stadium and be televised on the Big Ten Network. This will be not only the first conference game for the two teams, it also will be the first Big Ten contest of the season.

Rutgers officially will become a member of the Big Ten on July 1. The Scarlet Knights will be playing in the East Division, meaning they will compete against the Nittany Lions annually. The two universities have squared off 24 times (Penn State leads, 22-2), but their last meeting was in 1995.

The announcement Tuesday gives Penn State a third night game. The Lions also will play at Michigan on Oct. 11 at 7 p.m. (ESPN or ESPN2) and host Ohio State at 8 p.m., Oct. 25 (ABC, ESPN, or ESPN2) at Beaver Stadium.

The only other starting time set on the Penn State schedule is the opener on Aug. 30 against Central Florida in Dublin, Ireland. That contest will kick off at 8:30 a.m. Philadelphia time (1:30 p.m. in Dublin).
