Inside the school's cafeteria, surrounded by family and friends, Russell, a 5-foot-11 senior, committed to Rhode Island University ahead La Salle and Grand Canyon University.
In the end, Russell's bond with Rams coach Danny Hurley won his allegiance.
"The relationship I had with him," Russell said, "I talk to him just like one of my friends."
An up-tempo style of play also helped.
Seton Hall was also in the running for Russell, who won the Public League's Division A MVP in 2015 and led the Panthers to a Public League title as a sophomore.
After losing in the Public League playoffs to eventual champ Del-Val and eventually PIAA 3A champ Neumann-Goretti, Russell now has his sights set.
"Honestly, I have a little revenge in me to win a state and Public League championship," he said. "That's what I'm aiming for this year."
