Council Rock North thumps Upper Dublin in District 1 baseball

Upper Dublin hit only four balls to the outfield Friday afternoon and none went in the direction of Seth Leuz.

Upper Dublin hit only four balls to the outfield Friday afternoon and none went in the direction of Seth Leuz.

"I was just chillin' out there," the C.R. North rightfielder said. "I should have gotten a lawn chair or something."

Offensively, Leuz was very much part of a 14-hit attack that propelled the visiting Indians to a 10-0, six-inning rout of the Cardinals in a PIAA District 1 Class 4A quarterfinal in Fort Washington.

The 5-foot-10, 190-pound senior went 3 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs from the No. 5 hole as C.R. North moved closer to its second straight district title and third in the last seven seasons.

Leuz delivered an RBI single to right-center field and scored on Tyler Nowmos' two-run single in a four-run first inning. His RBI single to left made it 5-0 in the second.

"Nothing fazes him, nothing bothers him," Indians skipper Matt Schram said of the Newtown resident. "He's cooler than the other side of the pillow."

Leuz opened the sixth with a single through the middle and notched the team's 10th run on James Closser's sacrifice fly. The mercy rule was invoked in the bottom half when Upper Dublin failed to avert a shutout.

Next for No. 6 seed C.R North (19-3) is Tuesday's 4 p.m. semifinal against No. 2 Downingtown West (19-2) at a neutral site to be determined. The Whippets advanced with a 10-1 rout of No. 10 Spring-Ford.

Righthanders Gavin Ferrandino (four innings) and C.J. Kilgarriff combined on a two-hitter against the third-seeded Cardinals (14-7). Ferrandino, a sophomore and the squad's No. 2 starter, gave up singles in the first and third.

"We just needed him to throw strikes," Schram said of Ferrandino. "If he threw strikes, which he did, we knew we'd be in a good position to win."

Batting behind Leuz, first baseman Chase D'Arcangelo went 3 for 3 with two RBIs. His RBI double to left in the fourth plated shortstop Matt Hand (1 for 2, two runs, two walks) and increased the lead to 8-0.

Five District 1 Class 4A teams will qualify for states. Upper Dublin (14-7) will host Spring-Ford (18-6) in a playback contest at 4 p.m. Tuesday.

Leuz, who was an outside linebacker and running back in football, plans to study sports management at Liberty. "I may try to be a walk-on baseball player," the 18-year-old said.
