Souderton slips past Council Rock North in softball thanks to Carty

A single would have been fine, Angie Carty said. "Just a poke," the Souderton senior said afterward. "Anything." With two runners on and her team up by only a run in the second inning, it didn't matter to Carty how the ball got into play. She just knew she had to put it there.

A single would have been fine, Angie Carty said.

"Just a poke," the Souderton senior said afterward. "Anything."

With two runners on and her team up by only a run in the second inning, it didn't matter to Carty how the ball got into play. She just knew she had to put it there.

The leadoff batter delivered for the Big Red, sending an outside pitch to right field for a triple and sending two of her teammates home.

The two-run triple ended up being the difference maker for Souderton on Saturday afternoon in a pivotal nonconference win over Council Rock North, 3-2.

"She's one of the most aggressive on the team," Alyssa McCormick said of Carty. "She always has her head up, always picks everybody up. It's great to have a captain with that kind of attitude."

It was the second triple of the inning for Souderton (6-5), as pitcher Alex Scheeler started the frame with a shot that almost cleared the right-field fence. McCormick knocked Scheeler home with a single, getting her team on the board first.

"Moving runners one by one - that's all we have to do - it's batter by batter," Carty said. "That definitely kept us moving, and once I was on third it kept the momentum up."

Down by 3-0 after two innings, Council Rock North (8-2) battled back, earning one run in the third when Nicole Rounsavill's single knocked a runner across and another in the sixth on Kalli Segel's RBI double. The Indians, however, struggled to string hits together as Scheeler and the Souderton defense shut their opponent down.

It was in contrast to early-season struggles that started with just one bad inning, according to Carty, McCormick, and Scheeler.

"We usually have one or two innings where things go downhill for us - one screw-up inning," Carty said. "We didn't have that inning today."

And as a result, Souderton is now a game above .500 for just the second time this season.

"We want to be in the playoffs, and we are just trying to do our best to get there," Scheeler said.

Saturday was as good as any a place to start.
