Harriton girls beat C.B. East in lacrosse

At 6 feet, Harriton High sophomore Greta Stahl can't exactly hide lackluster effort on the lacrosse field.

So when coach George Dick called her out - then pulled her out - early in the game Wednesday at Central Bucks East, Stahl didn't even argue.

"He ruffled my feathers a little bit," said a smiling Stahl, whose four goals and two assists helped the Rams rout the Patriots, 18-4.

"He's really tough on me," she said, smiling. "I think he knows I have potential, so he gets mad when I don't work hard enough. He pulled me out, told me to get my head in the game. And soon as I did, I think I did pretty well."

Stahl, who comes from quality athletic stock, reentered with the score 2-1 early in the first half and promptly added a goal that sparked an 11-2 Rams run to end the half.

Laura Lasprogata led Harriton (2-0) with five goals and Alex Ladda added four more.

The Patriots (0-1) were led by junior Maggie Vetter with two goals. Junior goaltender Anna Rosenquist finished with 11 impressive saves.

Last season, a fretful Stahl was rarely bold enough to force a goalie's hand.

"Last year I was terrified to play," she said. "I was terrified to take it to the goal, terrified to do anything. I had all these seniors around me and I was like, 'Oh, crap, I don't want to take a shot because what if I miss?' "

By the end of her freshman year, however, Stahl had grown more confident.

Her father is Dave Stahl, a former Villanova offensive lineman. Her mother, Janit Gorka, was a standout rower at Villanova and now coaches the sport at Cabrini. Stahl's oldest brother, Bennett, is a rower at Cal, and another brother, William, is a junior lacrosse and basketball player for Harriton.

It's early, but Stahl has drawn interest from Northwestern and Loyola, which she visited Tuesday.

"Coming back here and getting our first [District 1] win was really nice, exciting," Stahl said. "It's a big start to our season."
