McShane named Pennsbury football coach

After directing Pennsbury's rugged defense for the last four seasons, veteran coach Dan McShane has been named the new football boss for the Suburban One League National Conference power.

Before joining former coach Galen Snyder's staff as a defensive line and linebackers coach in 2011, McShane, 57, was in charge at Bensalem for 10 years.

"This just kind of evolved," he said. "Galen mentioned a couple of years back there was the possibility of him leaving after his son [Luke, a linebacker for Pennsbury] played his final season."

Look for the Falcons to make a major switch on offense under McShane and go from a "ground and pound" style to multiple and spread formations with more passing.

"We're going to be as balanced as possible," McShane said. "We'll probably do some no-huddle, read-option, and four-receiver sets."

McShane, a health and physical education teacher at Bensalem, was a guard and linebacker at West Catholic in the mid-1970s. He went on to be a defensive lineman at West Chester.

In 14 seasons at Pennsbury, Snyder compiled a 116-48 record, won four National Conference titles and earned two District 1 Class 4A crowns (2006 and 2014).

"My short-term goal is to get our guys in the weight room," McShane said. "As far as next season goes, we want to compete for the league title and then go from there."
