Inside Recruiting: Randolph impressing at Westtown School

It's no wonder Westtown School coach Seth Berger gives Brandon Randolph the "neon green light" when it comes to launching shots from beyond the arc.

It's no wonder Westtown School coach Seth Berger gives Brandon Randolph the "neon green light" when it comes to launching shots from beyond the arc.

In the first half of Tuesday's matchup against Friends Schools League rival Academy of the New Church, the junior wing guard nailed five consecutive three-point attempts as the visitors built a 32-21 advantage.

Following three misses from that distance, Randolph hit back-to-back treys in the third quarter, finished with 25 points, and the Moose left Bryn Athyn with a 66-53 triumph that clinched the No. 2 seed and a home game against No. 3 ANC in the league semifinal playoff at 4 p.m. Tuesday.

"He can shoot the heck out of the ball," Berger said. "He plants his feet well, has a good release, and he's confident on every shot."

The 6-foot-6, 170-pounder shot 7 of 12 from three-point range against the Lions. He was 9 of 16 overall from the field, made five steals and grabbed a pair of rebounds.

"He's not only a great outside shooter," Berger said. "He scores well around the rim, leaps very high, and he's good in transition."

A native of Yonkers, N.Y., Randolph came to Westtown, a boarding school in West Chester, before this school year. He previously was at the Masters School in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.

"I was looking for a better academic and basketball situation," the 18-year-old said. "I had heard about what Westtown had to offer, knew Seth Berger was a great coach and liked that Jared Nickens and Daniel Ochefu had played here."

Nickens is a 6-7 sophomore wing playing about 20 minutes a game at Maryland. Ochefu is a 6-11 senior forward at No. 3-ranked Villanova. The big man missed the Wildcats' last two games because of a concussion.

Randolph, who plays AAU ball for the PSA Cardinals, suffered a knee injury in April and was sidelined over the summer.

"I went through rehab, then came back and spent a lot of time in the gym," he said. "I worked on being a more complete player."

The soft-spoken, long-range sniper (72 treys in 27 games) has since emerged as a high-major prospect. He has scholarship offers from George Washington, Louisville, St. John's, Temple, and Vanderbilt, among others.

Is Randolph leaning toward any college? "I just love college basketball overall," he said. "I don't have any favorites."

Westtown's talent-filled lineup also features 6-4 senior floor general Jair Bolden, who is bound for George Washington, 6-11 junior center Mohamed Bamba, and 6-7 sophomore wing Cameron Reddish.

Bamba, a five-star prospect, delivered 18 points, 14 rebounds (five on offense) and two blocks against ANC.
