Wood QB Anthony Russo backs out of Rutgers commitment

Archbishop Wood quarterback Anthony Russo has backed out of his commitment from Rutgers and reopened his recruitment, he announced Monday night on Twitter.

Archbishop Wood quarterback Anthony Russo has backed out of his commitment from Rutgers and reopened his recruitment, he announced Monday night on Twitter.

"The past few weeks praying and sitting down with my family, we have decided that it is in my best interest to decommit from Rutgers University," the 6-foot-4, 225-pounder wrote.

It is expected that new Rutgers coach Chris Ash will run a spread attack with a dual-threat QB at the controls. That likely played a part in Russo's decision. Mostly a pocket passer, he is more suited to a pro-style scheme.

Russo is seriously considering Temple and may make a visit to LSU in the near future, according to a source. LSU has targeted the strong-armed QB but has yet to offer him a scholarship.

Last season, Russo completed 134 of 200 passes for 2,452 yards and 35 touchdowns while directing the Vikings to an 11-1 record.

In October, Temple landed an oral commitment from Montel Aaron, a 6-5, 200-pound senior QB from Antelope High in Northern California. But it is believed that Russo has long been the Owls' top recruit at the position.
