After early push, Haverford School rolls by St. Joe's Prep

Alexander Scalamandre had just scored for St. Joseph's Prep when Haverford School's Grant Ament shared a glance with a few teammates.

Scalamandre's goal, which came just 11 seconds after Kevin Stump had scored, capped a five-goal spurt that tied the nonleague lacrosse game at 5-5.

Unfortunately for the Prep, it also got the attention of the undefeated Fords.

"There was a point after they scored that fifth goal that I looked at Forry Smith and Tucker McBride and was like, 'All right, time to turn it on,' " Ament said.

What followed was an onslaught of eight straight goals en route to an 18-9 Fords triumph Saturday at home on senior day.

"We have this switch, this second gear we can hit," Ament said. "We don't usually need to hit it, but if we need to score, we know when it's time. We flipped the switch [today] and it all kind of took care of itself."

Ament, a 5-foot-7 senior attacker, finished with three goals and six assists. Drew Supinski added four scores for Haverford School (20-0), the No. 1-ranked team in the nation by Nike/Lacrosse Magazine.

The Fords' 13-1 run spanned the second, third, and fourth quarters.

"You don't always want to rely on that every game," Ament said. "I think we do need to come out and start playing a little bit harder. I think this week we took some of the teams for granted, and with the schedule we play we have to play every game like it's our last. . . ."

He added: "St. Joe's Prep, if they scored a goal here or there, it could have been a much different game. They're a great team."

The Hawks (8-5) were led by Stump's three goals and sophomore Mike Marchese's seven saves.

Ament's adept assisting, however, helped Haverford School pull away.

"I like to think of myself as the quarterback of the team," he said. "I'm not really out for the glory of the goals. I don't really care about that as long as my team is scoring and I'm helping get opportunities for [teammates]. I like being able to set them up for goals, and in my opinion that's just as good."

Next year, the Doylestown resident will pass for Penn State, where his older brothers, Blake and Brandon, play club lacrosse.

Until then, Ament hopes his pass-first attitude can lead the Fords to an undefeated season.

"I think that's something great about this team, because we're all unselfish," he said.
