Collingswood runs over Audubon

Jahmir King finally stopped.

The Collingswood running back they call "Turbo" found a lane between three defenders and went untouched for 60 yards, but he quickly hit the brakes when he reached the end zone.

He turned around, crossed his arms, and waited for the rest of his team to celebrate with him in the end zone.

That seemed to be the way to go Saturday afternoon. Patience paid off for him and his team all day.

Collingswood divided 32 carries among nine ballcarriers, and, when he got his turn, King was the fourth Panther to run for a touchdown in a 41-0 win at Audubon in a Colonial Conference Liberty matchup.

"It doesn't matter who's in," King said. "We're all going to get our attention. As long as we win, we're cool with that."

On seven carries, King accounted for 146 of the team's 292 rushing yards. Marcquon Lawrence was next with five carries for 77 yards and a pair of scores.

"We have power. We have speed. We have elusiveness. We pretty much have the whole package," Collingswood coach Jack McConnell said. "They're really good about the team aspect.

"We could give any of these kids the ball 20 times, and they could have a big game. What's opening up our offense is all those threats. Each one of them is opening up the offense for the other ones."

Dashon Burdett, who also ran for a score, added, "Just because you're second-string doesn't mean you're not getting the ball. You have to be ready at all moments. You never know when it's going to be your turn."

As strong as Collingswood's running game was, its defense was just as stout. Collingswood (5-1 overall, 2-1 Liberty) had three sacks, forced two turnovers, and held Audubon (2-4, 1-3) to 94 yards. The Green Wave finished with 16 rushing yards, but was at negative-1 through three quarters.

After Burdett ran for a score, he scooped a fumble and ran 38 yards for his second touchdown.

"When I got that touchdown, I just wanted to hug all my teammates," Burdett said. "We did good."

Collingswood, The Inquirer's 25th-ranked team in South Jersey, earned its fourth straight win entering a league showdown with No. 8 West Deptford on Friday. Last year, West Deptford won, 34-7.

"We're definitely ready for West Deptford," Burdett said. "We've been preparing in the weight room, practicing. . . . Last year, we came up short, but this year, we're coming strong."

If next week is anything like Saturday, the game will be worth the wait.
