Pa. Boys: Tues. Pa. boys: Prep gets past top-ranked Wood

Judging by the records alone, St. Joseph's Prep's 1-0 win over Archbishop Wood should have registered as a titanic soccer upset. In the Catholic League, they call that Tuesday.

Judging by the records alone, St. Joseph's Prep's 1-0 win over Archbishop Wood should have registered as a titanic soccer upset. In the Catholic League, they call that Tuesday.

Michael Carr's breakaway goal late in the second half gave the Hawks the major victory they've been on the verge of all season.

Andrew Magiera, who had come in as a substitute, made the pass to spring Carr. Francis Maniscalco had six saves.

The Prep (3-3-4 overall, 3-2-1 league) had won just one of its previous seven games, but that doesn't tell the story. The Hawks tied Shipley and Roman Catholic and fell by one goal to Father Judge and La Salle during that difficult stretch.

Previously unbeaten Archbishop Wood (12-1-1) has been The Inquirer's top-ranked team in Southeastern Pennsylvania since the middle of September.

In other Catholic League games:

Brandon Gutekunst won a challenge with the goalkeeper at the 18-yard line to score the game's only goal 20 minutes in, and Roman Catholic beat Lansdale Catholic, 1-0, at the United German Hungarian Club.

Eric Trush scored twice and Mark Pohl picked up his sixth shutout in Father Judge's 4-0 win at Archbishop Ryan.

Central. Joe Soffer headed home a free kick from Cam Riccardi in the first half, and Strath Haven went on to beat visiting Penncrest, 2-0. Alex Belanger also scored.

Jim Reardon volleyed home a deflected direct kick from Ryan Straube, and Springfield (Delco) downed visiting Radnor, 1-0.

Willie Fineberg's two goals paced Haverford High in a 3-1 victory at Harriton.

Suburban One National. Connor Weiss converted a penalty kick and Billy Hanratty added a goal to power William Tennent's 2-0 win at Truman.

Nick Marella's first-half goal was all Central Bucks West needed in a 1-0 triumph over visiting Pennridge.

Cross-Country

Germantown Academy's Sam Ritz blazed across the line in 15 minutes, 58 seconds, setting a record at his home course and winning his fourth straight dual meet. The previous record of 16:10 was set by his brother, Ben Ritz, and Max Huang-Hobbs last year. Haverford School won the Inter-Ac meet, 28-31.

Also in the Inter-Ac:

Led by Ryan Doane's time of 17:14, Malvern Prep defeated Penn Charter, 18-37, at Belmont Plateau.

Jack Jorgensen finished first in 18:03 to help host Episcopal Academy beat Springside Chestnut Hill, 21-39.

Golf

St. Joseph's Prep's Paul Mauer shot an even-par 71 at LuLu Country Club in North Hills, and the Hawks edged La Salle to win the Catholic League championship. The Hawks had seven players in the 70s to finish with a team score of 455 to La Salle's 462, ending the Explorers' four-year title run.

Inter-Ac. Sophomore Nick Miller fired a 3-under-par 32 at Huntingdon Valley Country Club to lead Malvern Prep to victory at the Penn Charter Invitational. Mike Miller and Mike Szipszky each shot 1-over 36 en route to a team total of 222 for the Friars. Haverford School was second with 229.
