Aside from a couple of games, the Plymouth Whitemarsh baseball team hasn't overwhelmed many teams with runs this season. The Colonials haven't had to.

Mike Whalon threw his second consecutive shutout, and Plymouth Whitemarsh topped visiting Upper Dublin, 1-0, in Suburban One American play Wednesday.

That has been the M.O. The Colonials, 5-0 in the league and 7-0 overall, have allowed 13 runs this season and five in their last four games. They have won three games by one run and two by two runs.

Whalon, a senior lefthander, struck out nine. He allowed four hits and walked one. Brett Highland drove in the lone run in the fifth inning.

In another Suburban One American contest, Kyle Irwin played the role of catalyst for Upper Moreland in a 7-4 triumph over visiting Springfield (Montco). Irwin went 2 for 3, reached base all four times he came to the plate, and scored three runs. Eddie Decker struck out nine and allowed two earned runs in six innings.

Suburban One National. Matt Renck and Brandon McIlwain combined on a no-hitter in Council Rock North's 6-5 win over visiting Neshaminy. The Indians had nine hits but made five errors.

Catholic League Red. Cardinal O'Hara's Will Latcham held visiting St. Joseph's Prep to two runs on six hits in a 3-2 victory. Latcham struck out eight in seven innings. Nick Newman went 2 for 3.

Catholic League Blue. Charlie Jerla's walk-off single in the seventh inning capped a three-run rally and gave Neumann-Goretti a 3-2 win over Lansdale Catholic. Justin Curtin tied the game with a two-run single and came around to score the winning run. Jerla, a Marist recruit, struck out eight and walked one in seven innings.

Inter-Ac. Demetrius Isaac's two-out single with the bases loaded was the big blow of a three-run sixth as Penn Charter won, 5-1, at Malvern Prep. T.J. Pagan allowed four hits in six innings.

Lacrosse

Will Manganiello's 150th career goal was also the overtime winner as host Penncrest topped Bishop Shanahan, 9-8, in a nonleague meeting of unbeatens. Manganiello scored four goals.

Football

Tom Hetrick was named head football coach at Central Bucks South. He previously was an assistant coach, working with the offensive linemen and outside linebackers, for the Titans.

Hetrick, a social studies teacher in the Central Bucks School District since 1995, was an assistant at Central Bucks South for the last six seasons. Before that, he was an assistant at Central Bucks East (2000-07).

"Being a head coach at this level is something I've dreamed about for a long time," said Hetrick, 42. "I've been waiting for this opportunity for 19 years."

Hetrick, of Chalfont, replaces Dave Rackovan, who stepped down after four seasons to coach at the Hill School in Pottstown.
